I can't see why you say there is no practical difference. One believes in God; one does not. That's a pretty significant difference. The only difference between a Deist and a religious person of the Judeo-Christian type is that a Deist says we do not know what God wants, or else that God does not involve himself in the lives of humans. In any case, they trust their own moral judgment rather than a set of rules handed down from On High. A Deist is therefore more like an agnostic than an atheist.

I disagree.

"Deists typically reject supernatural events (prophecy, miracles) and tend to assert that God does not interfere with human life and the laws of the universe. Deists commonly respect divine revelation prominent in organized religion, along with holy books as conveying the reasoning and personal experience of others."

and

"Critical elements of Deist thought included:
Rejection of all religions based on books that claim to contain the revealed word of God.
Rejection of reports of miracles, prophecies and religious "mysteries".
Rejection of the Genesis account of creation and the doctrine of original sin, along with all similar beliefs.
Rejection of Judaism, Christianity, Islam and other religious beliefs.

Constructive elements of Deist thought included:
God exists and created the universe.
God wants human beings to behave morally.
Human beings have souls that survive death; that is, there is an afterlife.
In the afterlife, God will reward moral behavior and punish immoral behavior."

There's no way an atheist will go with: "God exists and created the universe."
But thanks for putting it up; I learnt a bit about Deism.

No diff?

Deist believe in a creator god that set the cosmos in order and then left it alone.

Atheists do not believe in any Gods at all.

BIG difference.

No.

Deists mostly existed because there was no evolutionary explanation for life. Once Darwin published his Origin of Spoecies, most became atheists, but some did not.

Deism is belief in a God through personal experience, rather than having read about God in the Bible, Qur'an etc.

No, a deist is someone who at least has enough common sense to realize a creation when they see it.

Homeland Security- you don't know that. Belief in an impersonal God does not equal salvation.

Hey "Question Everything" You are correct. I originally had a banana(as you can see on my 360 account), then I changed the picture and kept the name. I figure a dude with a guy is a more realistic nightmare.
