You should tip the pizza guy because he has to buy his own gas and drive his own old beat up car. Did you ever see the cars those guys drive??? I do. I see their cars when they bring the food, and I see their cars when I go to pick up my order (they are parked outside).
I don't order pizza, but I do order a hoagie or a cheese steak. My order usually comes to $6 or $7. I usually tip a dollar and the change. If the weather is bad, I tip more.
The pizza place is about a mile and a half from the house.

It is true that most pizza restaurants charge a delivery fee. However, the delivery person never sees this fee; it goes to the restaurant and is not a tip. Therefore, yes, you should tip. The proper tip is 15%. For a $25 order, the proper tip would be $3.75.
Below is a link for a really cool website that tells all about pizza delivery etiquette and includes a tip calculator.

No they don't consider the tip in the price! Yes you should tip because the next time you order pizza that person that does that route will remember you and make sure your pizza is cold and will go out of their way to take their time. You tip= hot pizza, and all the fixings that go along with the delivery. Like for example Parmesan cheese or red peppers etc.. Hopefully they will not shake up your 2 liter b4 you get it if you buy soda?
Otherwise don't bite the hand that feed you.

Your ex is very much mistaken. Delivery drivers don't make all that much money and are paid hourly, not according to number of deliveries. The tip that comes from the customer is important to them, since their company does not calculate a tip and automatically add it to the overall charge. You did the right thing. I usually tip $5 myself, but that is a bit more than most people tip. I've actually heard (on the phone) two people arguing over who will deliver my pizza, since I am known to reliably tip $5 every single time.

If you're running low on cash, then don't tip them. Your boyfriend is right, they already do take the tip from the cost of delivery, which is why it's more to buy a pizza and have it delivered than to buy a pizza and go pick it up yourself. That's why they ask you to clarify whether it's pick up or delivery so they can tell how much they need to take out, or not.
I always have them deliver and usually I give the guy a $5 tip. I know they already have the tip in the billed amount but I'm just generous like that. =)

Yup. I'd say $5. for a $25. delivery- would be about right. Pizza delivery people RARELY get paid much more than minimum wage...(& HALF the time it's THEIR GAS they're using to deliver those pizzas on!). And since they're oftentimes Students- working their way through College, those tips COUNT. Put yourself in THEIR shoes under THOSE circumstances... Wouldn't YOU appreciate a $5. tip for lugging 2 pizzas half-way across town??! :)

You should tip 15% of the food bill. Some places may charge a "delivery fee" but that is not the same thing as a tip.

I always tip. My friends who delivered food had to pay for their own gas. They are saving you the bother of procuring your food, and they often have to drive through bad traffic, bad weather, try to find your address under conditions of poor visibility...
Plus I notice that the ones I tip generously tend to deliver my food faster.
If you can't afford to tip, don't order out.
