It seemed like a chewy hamburger with very little taste. Did I get served a bad steak?

It depends on the cut of steak it was, different steak requires different cooking styles.
If it tasted bland it was under seasoned.
If it was a premium cut you have over cooked it. If it was a tougher cut it was probably undercooked.

Like everyone else has said so far it totally depend on the cut of steak, and how its cooked. Tenderloin, or cuts like the filet mignon that come from this region of the cow are usually the most tender, however many people prefer cuts like the new york or the rib eye because they have more fat. Fat=flavor.

Also consider the source of your steak. Did you get it at sizzler, or a nice steak house. If your still worried about it being bland try a peppersteak next time

Because you're not eating the right cut of steak and it sounds like it was way overcooked anyway. Steak should have some pink to it. Really.

It sounds like it was overcooked. Rare to medium rare leaves it juicy and tasty, but well done is just shoe leather. It also depends on the cut of steak. Was it a chuck, or sirloin or t-bone?
