Of course we have hobbies and interests...i find science and astronomy fascinating. God is in everything and made these things for His Glory and for us to enjoy. Continue to enjoy your study of an Awesome universe..and be happy. : x )
Just a thought: I wouldn't listen to anyone telling you not to worship this or that..it can sometimes come from ppl who need to look at their own lives ?? besides your not "worshiping" these things..your appreciating them.
Good answer jimi... : x )

Great question! Yes, Christians can have hobbies and interests outside church.
While it is true that a Christian will have God as their highest interest, and the One they most love to spend time with, God doesn't mind us having other interests. If you are a friend of someone, you usually share some of their interests. Using science as an example - since God made all the galaxies, stars, planets, all the different species of plants and animals, all the different scientific laws, etc, I think He would enjoy us sharing His interest in those things.
There are many references in the Bible to the stars and other aspects of creation, and we are encouraged to think about these things.
I am a Christian, and I am also interested in art, music, writing, and reading. I also believe that as my life continues, I will develop new interests. (My interest in art, for example, has just suddenly "sprung up" so to speak in the last year or so, even though in retrospect I see it was kind-of there in the background for most of my life.)

Yes, I play tennis, study astronomy and advanced computers (research on robotics, artificial intelligence) in my spare time.
However, all these activities are shadowed by my faith in God - so whatever anyone says, I believe that the universe and everything in it is created by the word of God. Likewise, if my personal research may open up possibilities for use (and similar misuse), then it shall die with me rather than be disclosed to a Godless world that will only seek to use it to further discredit my Lord and increase evil.
May we have wisdom and understanding from Him,
Andrew

It depends a lot on which denomination of Christianity you are talking about. Some are perfectly reasonable, others are nutty. It can also vary according to specific churches and individuals, of course. For instance, most Catholics I know would never say something like that, however, every once in a while you meet a Catholic that is a little odd.

Yes, Christians are allowed to have hobbies outside the church.
Jesus says, "I want you to enjoy life and have it in more abundance."
When hobbies, friends, church, family & work become the "be-all to end-all" top importance/focus to you above Jesus Christ...then and only then does a legal hobby become an "idol worship" problem that you would need to correct.

God's the best motivator there is, he helps people develop their gifts and gets them involved in things that prosper them. This is not only good for individual but also for society and the church.
Donating your brain to science will not get you into heaven: if anything, hiding ones talents under bushels gets you into trouble with your maker!

Stop lumping all Christians into a single group, or should we start presuming that all non-Christians should be considered identical to Pol Pot or Stalin?
Some Christians are totalitarian in their life, not all of us.

I hate when they do that. I absolutely love reading, writing, music, astronomy, and tons and tons of other stuff... We're allowed, but some people misinterpret things...
