Perhaps...or, in my opinion, more likely because people don't perceive anything perfectly!

I've spent quite a bit of time studying various so-called "contradictions" in the bible and in every case, I came to understand that they weren't contradictions at all...the inconsistency was in my own interpretation not in the message.

Miscommunication due to improper decoding is a common problem with all forms of communication...and one of the biggest causes of improper decoding is related to "frame of reference". People attach meaning to messages based on their own perceptions, thoughts, feelings, and more and many messages, especially ones that trigger intense emotions, are misinterpreted by the receiver.

In my opinion, if you're looking for contradictions in any message (verbal, non-verbal or written), you are going to find them (self-fulfilling prophecy perhaps?). On the other hand, if you're looking for consistency, you're more likely to find it. ...and with the bible, you'll find perfect consistency if you read it and seek the truth in it.

Probably not. Many of them are because the people who were in charge of the writings, at the time they were made, and after, were political creatures. Generally, people who are not historians, or don't take time to study the information available, don't understand very much of how society worked then...but religion and politics were mostly one in the same. Thus, in the time when the old testament was documented, and then maintained, things changed in the writings as differing tribes came to be in power...they had different views on important religious concepts...thus, those who followed Moses, for example, had differing priorities than those who believed that Aaron was the actually the one who had the market on truth in the bible. So, the old testament is full of different views. You can read about this in some good books, one of the best being called Who Wrote the Bible.

As for the rest, time, language, translation issues, and of course, the influence of western religious/political factions have all left their mark on the bible. No writing ever goes unchanged through thousands of years of movement from one culture, time period, language, etc. to another.
