This is regarding my 21st birthday...I just turned 21 about a week ago, and of course that means legally drinking alcohol. Now I'm not looking to get drunk every night or something, but there's a lot out there to taste and I like how alcohol brings out the flavor in food. Anyway, my family, everyone around me it seems is looking down on me for wanting to buy alcohol at all. Why? I mean is it bad for me to do that or what?

Alcoholics dont choose to be that way. Its a genetic thing and if it runs in your family you could be at high risk to be one and your family would naturally worry about that. Sometimes all it takes is one drink to set you off on that path. So find out the facts on alcoholism and your family history before you start drinking.

No, it's actually pretty strange that people are "looking down on you" for wanting to buy alcohol. You just turned 21, fergodsakes! These people are close to you and they should know that you just want to try new things, especially since you said you just want to try different alcoholic beverages with certain foods to see how they bring the flavors out. You're "not looking to get drunk every night", so what's their problem?

You shouldn't have to do this, but make your intentions clear to your family/friends/whoever is bothering you about this. Tell them that you are 21 years old and you are legally allowed to purchase and consume alcohol. Tell them that there is absolutely nothing wrong with what you are doing, but it IS wrong for them to make you feel guilty for it. Make it known that you are not going to allow them to treat you this way any longer. Be firm yet understanding. If they have any sense at all, they'll lighten up.

Why not just be honest and say that you are 21 and you want to be able to experiment with drinking now that you are legal? Brings out the flavor in your food? Please.

My advise is this, do not drink and drive, ever. If you are going to drink while you are out, go with a group and someone in the group does not drink. This will keep you from making stupid mistakes that lead to being raped and murdered or killed (or killing someone else)in a drunk driving accident. Otherwise buy the booze and have the friends over and drink at home. Make sure no one leaves drunk, keep plenty of pillows for the sleep overs.

My daughters were pretty cured after a couple of parties where they basically spent the night puking. Great fun, huh?

Turning 21 is a big deal & a new responsibility for you.It should be celebrated w/ caution BUT that's no reason for anyone to rain on your parade.I'm sure they just don't want you to go overboard w/ it, is all. It's not a bad thing by all means to drink & you are right-there are plenty of good drinks out there(I like a Bahama Mama myself).Just do it in moderation. It's so easy to let drinking turn from a weekend thing to a weekday thing. As far as your family & friends on this issue...prove to them that you can enjoy your new responsibility in an adult fashion & reassure them you know your do's & don'ts.Let them know you will NEVER drink & drive & it's not a bad idea to brush up on your state's alcohol tolerance & what-not.By showing them you know your stuff & you are no dummy, maybe it will help put their minds at ease.Cheers!

Well, this is a game your family THINK they are into. You can have and drink alcohol at any age!!!! , we can get it anywhere!!!! isn't it true???????????? of course it is.
But now because you are "legal age" they think that alcohol is now on your reach, c'mon!
You are smarter than that...tasting drinks with food, doesn't mean you are to become alcoholic or drunk!!! and then be stupid enough to drive!!! you sound like a responsible person....otherwise you would not even bother to ask.
Take it easy, don't worry, and they will see that this is not DEFINETLY your priority......

Do your family not drink alcohol at all? If they don't, your intention to try it probably makes them very anxious because they have no first hand experience of it themselves. They will be very conscious that if it is used to excess, it can cause a great many problems, and of course they will fear that for you.

Do they have a religious reason for not using it? Because if it's against their religious principles, they will feel that you're discarding what they've taught you and that will probably lead then to fear that you might discard them as well.

Now, if your family do enjoy alcohol themselves, do they have some reason to fear that you are going to go overboard in your use of it? If you are shaking your head and saying "No" to these questions, then they don't seem to me to have any reason at all to suppose that you will not be responsible in sampling various alcoholic drinks, and you will have to go ahead and prove this to them by showing how responsible and sensible you can be and still enjoy a drink or two.

Your friends and family are against your buying alcohol, because they only know bad examples of people who abused alcohol. Or, they have programmed themselves to believe that drinking is horrible because they themselves don't know how to do it in moderation.

There is one great reason to maybe not drink. If you have had several alcoholics or drug addicts in your immediate family, you may want to refrain. Mainly because you could have a diological predisposition to becoming addicted.

Part of being an adult is having responsiblity, but it is also a chance to do things you couldn't do as a kid. Have fun, drink in moderation, be responsible, don't let it alter your life... AND happy belated birthday! :P

Now that you're legal to buy alcohol, your family is concerned that you'll like the taste so much that you won't be able to leave alcohol alone.

They just do not want you to abuse it. Perhaps there is a family problem with alcohol (and alcoholism is hereditary). Also drunk driving is one of the number one killers. Just sounds like your family cares and does not want you to make bad decisions.

Good luck!

Your family may be just scared about what could happen especially being young and going to alot of parties just to get drunk like getting a D.U.I. or even becoming intoxicated and killing someone or yourself in a car accident. If you do decide to drink be responsible, don't overdue it and be safe.
