would it be illegal to set the trap for the cat, as long as I humanely dispatched it when caught?

how can you possibly think of 'dispatching' a cat ? By the time you got it out the trap it would have suffered so much pain. Are you sick or what ? These traps are illegal anyway. Try setting it and getting your foot caught in it, very painful eh? You are an evil person, who cares about your stupid garden anyway?

Killing a stray cat is not acceptable. It is potentially owned by someone else.

The cat CAN be simply taken to a humane society, animal shelter or even a vet's office and given up to them. If the cat is someone else's property and is microchipped, they will get it back to the owner or place it up for adoption.

Why you even think there's a need to kill a domestic animal that inconveniences you is beyond me. Charges can be brought against you for doing it too, which can get you in a lot of legal trouble.

i don't know what a gin trap is but you can use a live trap and bring the cat to it's owners. tll them to keep it indoors. we put wood chips in our garden for the same reason. it's worked well.

With my danes and cats, when I want to keep them out of certain areas, I use a halloween scarry head that makes noises and lights up. When something gets close by it goes off and they run. It has a motion sensor.

Iworks great around my fish ponds.

That depends on were you live but in the most of the US. and in most of the EU. it would be illegal. Even if it is legal were you live, I wouldn't advise you to do it because you would hurt the cat.

There are products on the market that you can spray around where you don't want cats to go...you should give that a try.

Dont hurt it!
Just catch it normally.
If it wont let you pick it up, throw a jacket or blanket over it and catch it.
