If you have a local art centre / art club go to their exhibitions and get familiar with what is on offer and their prices. The nearest Art college might hold end of term exhibitions where you can find works. Better to buy real work rather than prints. You might have a local auction where they have pictures. There are also private dealers galleries but these tend to be more expensive. Even so they do support painters and encourage them ( and they have to make a living. ) Or like the guy below you could buy one of mine.

Are there any art colleges in your area? Look out for their degree shows, you could get some really great and interesting pieces at these for a very good price. Plus the artist might become a big name, which would mean that you are very lucky and have something that's got a high monetary as well as artistic value.
A tip: Only buy what you really really love, regardless of how famous or unknown the artist might become. After all, you have to live with it!

If you want original artworks, go to an art gallery. They sell art for a living.
If you want posters, go to a poster store.
It really all depends on your budget. You might also go to a good art fair and see LOTS of galleries under one roof.
