Are there people out there who are really "Dominionist" Christians, who seek to gain influence over the government in the USA? Or is this a bogey man made up by the media?

Is there anyone here who is "dominionist" or knows someone who is? Can you describe it to me without being rude?

Duck, that was a great answer - do you have a source that is actually from a Dominionist Christian group that states these objectives as their goals? (Especially the part about shutting down liberal churches)

Christian 'Dominionists' (Reconstructionalists, Theonomists) have largely usurped the local level political apparatus of the Republican Party, and are engaged in a sub rosa process to politically motivate moderate Christians under the false cover of religious issues such as morality and family values, under cover of front organizations like the Christian Coalition, the American Family Association and the Promise Keepers. The goal is nothing less than the takeover of all elective offices in the USA.

Their doctrine comes from the Bible, starting with the term 'dominion' at Genesis 1:28... “And God said unto them, [Adam and Eve] Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth and subdue it; and have DOMINION… over every living thing.” They interpret DOMINION as: “... a supremacy in determining and directing the actions of others or in governing politically, socially, or personally.”

They want to remake the USA as a theocracy... and they are succeeding.

Its most common form, Dominionism, represents one of the most extreme forms of Fundamentalist Christianity thought. Its followers, called Dominionists, are attempting to convert the laws of United States so that they match those of the Hebrew Scriptures. They intend to achieve this by using the freedom of religion in the US to train a generation of children via home-schooling and in private Christian religious schools. See: JESUS CAMP http://www.apple.com/trailers/magnolia/jesuscamp/trailer/

Later, their graduates will be charged with the responsibility of creating a new Bible-based political, religious and social order. One of the first tasks of this order will be to eliminate religious choice and freedom. Their eventual goal is to achieve the "Kingdom of God" in which much of the world is converted to Christianity. They feel that the power of God's word will bring about this conversion. No armed force or insurrection will be needed; in fact, they believe that there will be little opposition to their plan. People will willingly accept it. All that needs to be done is to properly 'explain it' to them.

All religious organizations, congregations etc. other than strictly Fundamentalist Christianity would be suppressed. Nonconforming Evangelical, main line and liberal Christian religious institutions would no longer be allowed to hold services, organize, proselytize, etc. Society would revert to the laws and punishments of the Hebrew Scriptures. Any person who advocated or practiced other religious beliefs outside of their home would be tried for idolatry and executed. Blasphemy, adultery and homosexual behavior would be criminalized; those found guilty would also be executed. There are two conservative Christian pastors in Texas who have advocated the execution of all Wiccans.

By failing to openly confront this insidious agenda, we have sown the seeds of our own destruction, while these religious wing-nuts are paving the way to Armageddon with gleeful anticipation.

Are you kidding me? There is no 'dominionist' organization that STATED these objectives. These are conspirators... they LIE about their objectives. Fortunately, a lot of them are also blabbermouths, so caught up in doing 'the Lord's work' that they occasionally let the cat out of the bag. It is only through people who are keeping an eye on them, and reporting on those kinds of slips, or infiltrating gatherings of insiders, that we know about this at all. Just check out those links to theocracywatch.com, and the urikareport.com... you'll start to get a pretty clear picture, and learn enough to begin checking it out on your own.

In my estimation, it is these guys who are the greatest threat to this country... and to the world... and to humanity... NOT Moslem terrorists.

This is the first I've heard of the term "Dominionist" Christianity. It must be a new coined word by some media people.

But for certain, there is such a thing as "Fundamentalist" Christians out there --and quite alive and kicking here in R&S too-- who have since created their own VOTING BLOCK that politicians cannot deny. In some quarters they have convinced their members as to which candidates to actively support, and which ones to sling their mud at. Which is why we have this sorry mess in the White House today.

There is always grave danger whenever any group of people will enforce their Religion with the affairs of State. Somehow they still haven't learned from their history books up to now, or simply want to look away from what Hitler and Nazism did in their part of the world not too long ago.

I know I'll get all the thumbs down for this sentiment... but I do try to speak the truth here.

Peace be with you.

Sounds like a gee-up by the media, the term that is.

However yes there will be some who'll use christianity as a way to influence over the government. It shouldn't come as a surprise, since people from other religions / political worldviews will do the same.

I don't mind religion influencing politics, since every different worldview gets a say in a democracy. And christianity's done alrite (at least in the past century) in the sense of maintaining stable law & order.

There are some right here on Answers. I'm not sure anyone has actually used that term, although you might do an advanced search on it if you care to. But they really do exist. Christian friends of mine told me about incidences which combine religion with politics, and they were very scary. And I'm sure it is true that fundamentalists have seriously attempted to impose their influence on government. The stories are written in many different media, there are lawsuits filed which attempt to do things like impose creationist propaganda on the public schools, ban abortions outright, prosecute gays (as they were under "morals laws" years ago), etc. These are religious issues, but they are taken into the courts and into Congress.

Check out Americans United for Separation of Church and State. They have quite a web site and can give you a lot of information.

This question reminds me of the old Palmolive dish soap commercials where someone asks their manicurist about Palmolive and the manicurist replies, "You're soaking in it right now!"

Yes Dominionist Christianity is very real and GW Bush is up to his eyebrows in it. (Which probably explains why the US is doing so many stupid and self-destructive things at the moment).

There is a whole bunch of info on it here:

Absolutely they exist. And guess what? They already have influence in the government. In fact, one of them is even the President! This is why it's so important for us atheists to stand up for ourselves.
