and what are some free applications like picasa i can download to do cool things to pictures?

Picasa does some pretty cool things - highly recommended.

The other question gets asked about a hundred times a day here. Read a bunch of questions and you'll find the answer.

Here's one quick solution:

1. Dupe the layer
2. Desaturate the new layer
3. Add a layer mask to the new layer
4. Make sure mask is selected
5. Select paint brush tool and black color
6. Paint where you want to erase the mask and see the color underneath.
7. If you goof, change the color to white and repaint the mask.
