Many of the Ferries go to Holyhead on Anglesey, where you have a choice of the regular "boat" or the "fastcat", If it still sails, a P&O ferry goes from Fleetwood, also from just above Lancaster. check with Stena Line they are probably your best option. ( how you get to Harwich as one of your replies suggests, past Blackpool, beats me, unless they mean the English translation of Dublin - Dub as in Black and Lyn as in Water or Pool, Dublin = Blackpool). The fastcat is only an hour and a half whereas the Boat takes a few hours, and sail with the tide times, so you need to check them.

I remember as a child getting a ferry as just a foot passenger, it does seem the websites are just catering for vehicles, but it may be worth phoning stenna line or Irish ferries to enquire, If you see it as an adventure in itself, then the trip is ok, but I seem to remember it took ages, but at least you can walk around and have a meal. I would only do it if I was taking a car, otherwise get the plane, eve with hanging around airports, it's still takes less time.

You can - but check into Ryan Air - local UK hopper airline - there are free seats on every flight - I think we paid $40 between Dublin and Liverpool. It ended up being cheaper and MUCH faster than the ferry.
