the exact words of Jesus are:
Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the road is easy that leads to destruction, and there are many who take it. For the gate is narrow and the road is hard that leads to life, and there are few who find it." Mathew 7: 13-14.

The struggle is INSIDE your soul. If you are fortunate enough to have the option to choose good (unlike some impoverished, desperate people), choosing an evil is your own responsibility, not some external demon's.

The saying refers to the difficulty of choosing good when evil is clearly more advantageous. Going with the flow is easy. Taking the path that doesn't appear to do you any personal good is hard.

Your question reveals your narrowed view based on a narrow religion.

Evil is Not separate from man but perceptual by man do to our own actions; the very struggle you speak of have never included any "Devil" for this is mans perceptions also and never intended.

In short, the struggle with man is with himself and no other.

The soul you speak of is you, you Personality, ever lasting, never "dying".

Heaven as you say is a "Christian view" and how can one argue, DAILY, with Christianity to any effect that "Heaven" is one of countless places after "death" as such concepts are never ending as places to learn, rest or escape and explore.

It's not 'necessary' it's just how it is. People will succumb to the world, and put worldly things first, people will make their morals based on what the majority deems okay/acceptable behavior, but they will be wrong, and the masses will be headed to destruction, while only a few people will actually use God's laws as standards, and humble themselves, sacrifice for God, etc...

The Narrow Way isn't to get Saved and Become a Child of GOD.
AnyBody can get Saved, it is Real Easy!

The Narrow Way is for AFTER your Saved and you Want to Walk Real Close to GOD (it is called Walking in Holiness).

Good and evil are what you define them to be. If you were alone and did not have to live in a society, there would not have been such concepts. Society sets rules and sees to it that the way of the transgressor is hard. Good, evil, spirit, heaven, hell and such other concepts make the role of society easier at it leads to self regulation.

Its not. If there is a God (mother nature), he (it) is so merciful that he (it) allows many religion to flurish in the world in order for everyone to make it to the other side. The truth belongs to no one, no sect, or no religion. The truth is universal and is for everyone to share, like air and water. Why do you think mother nature doesn't allow one religion to monopolize the planet?
