My cousin wants to buy a car here in California and she lives in Texas. Is that possible? She wants to buy it from a dealership. She wants to know if she can buy the car and have it registered in Texas so she doesnt have to pay California and Texas taxes and just pays Texas taxes. How does one go about this?

Yes, you can buy a car from a dealership CA & register it in Texas. As for sales tax, it depends on whether or not the states have reciprocity - i.e. just pay the sales tax to one state & the other one lets it go. You have to file some paperwork for this.

Here are the links to the CA & TX dmvs:

You can also call your local AAA to find out more information.

She should also check w/ her auto insurance agent & make sure she has coverage from the moment she takes possession of the car. The agent may also know about the sales tax issue.

That is going to depend on California's laws, if she is buying a new car from a dealer. I know if you live in Texas and buy a car in Louisiana you don't have to pay louisiana sales tax if you are registering it in Texas done it a lot of times.

Best way to work that is tell the dealer the car will be registered in Texas no California. And if nothing else have the dealer transfer the car to a Texas dealership and she pick up car as transport driver.

If she is buying the car from a private individual just have individual give her a notized bill of sale for the car and sign the title over to her. Then register it when she gets it back to Texas but she'll have to get insurance on it. If anything said they can just say she bought the car from the seller while the seller was visiting Texas.

I live in Missouri and we buys cars form Kansas all the time, at the time of sale let them know it is to be registered in Texas and they can calculate that and include papers that reflect that or not charge her sales tax at all with her proper ID from Texas (proof she lives there) then when she registers it she pays the sales tax then..., Just let the sales person know it is going to be licensed in Texas
