do i have to treat the canvas with something before starting ?

Pre-stretched canvases are usually also pre-primed. If it's whiter on the front than on the back, it's primed. You can put some more Gesso over it if you want to, but you don't have to.

Yes you should prime the canvas before, if don't the unprimed canvas will only last for a couple of 100 years or so and then start demolishing...that's what my art teacher would say. So its best to prime your canvas with gesso. One or two layers of it always works for me.

I always gesso my canvas first to protect it from the
acid in the oils....It also makes a better painting surface...

Yes you can. It is treated. But if you want a smootherr finish you could sand it and do a fresh layer of gesso.

yes..the canvas should be primed before painting. yet you could always experiment.
