I have heard that checking your credit score should be done seldomly as the amount of attempts on your acct can work against you. But say, you want to check to see if there is something on there you need to correct...? Is checking your credit score 1 time a year a bad or good idea?

When you check you own credit,it's a soft pull and doe's not count against you.

It's only when you apply for credit and someone else pulls your credit that it's a hard pull and counts between 3-5 points.

The exception to this is when you are shopping for a home or vehicle, then all inquiries made within a 14-day period are lumped together and only count as 1. They all show, but your score only takes one hit.

I check mine every 6-months just to make sure everything is correct.

If you pull your own credit report, it is a soft pull and does not affect your score.

When creditors check your credit, it's a hard pull and does negatively impact your score.

You can get your free credit report at AnnualCreditReport.com. Space out the report from each credit bureau thruout the year. This site is the only online site to get your free report. All other sites will give you a 30 free period when signing up for their credit monitoring services -- which can be very difficult to cancel.

No, it won't hurt your score. You checking your credit isn't the same as others doing it. It doesn't count against your score at all. In fact, it should be done. I only use: http://www.annualcreditreport.com It's the only truly free site to check your credit report.

I have heard that checking your credit score more that once a year will lower your credit rating. Same thing with doing a credit check. Which is funny, because in this day and age you are told to keep a close eye on your credit, yet if you do, you are penalized for it.

No checking your owe credit report will not harm your score check it as many times as you like. If it was harmfull think of all those credit monitoring services that would be out of business which check your report several times a month.
