it depends on the type of lens and the quality of the water. but unless your eye hurts or is turning red, its probably fine. dont make a habit of it. and if it hurts your eye or something thats not normal--take it out and go to a doctor!

The general consensus is not to use water, especially with soft, permeable lenses. Heck, I've often seen people who have dropped their lenses on the ground, just blow on the contacts, and pop them right back in! I would think that would be dangerous (i.e., scratched corneas or worse), but, I've never seen any of them have an adverse reaction. Go figure! What would "Felix Unger" do? ;)

If you're concerned about carrying around unwieldy flasks of cleaning solution and peripheral equipment, there are sterile wipe packets specially designed for contact lenses that you can buy from virtually any store (just enter "contact lens cleaning packet", without the quotes, into your favorite search engine).

You take the risk of an eye infection from bacteria in the basin. Best rinse it with your disinfecting agent first or at least some saline instead of tap water. I find tap water irritates my eye to no end. I keep a very small vile of saline with me in my pocket always. Good luck. Don't forget to wash your hands as well before putting the lens back in your eye. Anything you touch during the day will contaminate your hands..especially money! It's extremely filthy.

Possible infection from contact with the sink or from the water sediment. Although water can be clean to drink it may irritate your eyes eventually (they are more sensitive than your stomach). Plus it stings when you put it in, it's just not the same as saline or as safe.

Sometimes you can't avoid doing this, for example you get something your eye and have to remove the lens. You risk getting an eye infection, (just goes to show you our drinking water is full of bugs).
Just be sure to remove the lens when you get home and clean it.

nothing is as good as good saline contact solution for cleansing contacts, not even tap water. there could be microorganisms lurking in the water. plus bathrooms are breeding grounds for bacteria. many people make such mistakes with contacts, and get lucky. I hope you are one of those lucky ones.
