about 5 years ago, I started to fall into a really depressive episode. At first I thought it was only because I had a bad break from a relationship but the feelings wouldn't go away even after I got a new girlfriend. It was wrecking my life until a point where it was seriously affecting my work and personal life.

She was very worried but at the same time couldn't understand why I was still sad and thought that I still couldn't let go of my previous relationship. Being the wonderful person that she is, she put aside her feelings and suggested I go for psychiatric evaluation. Many months later and even more anti-depressants, I was not coming close to being better at all.

After doing some research online, I found out the real cause as you described it really makes a lot of sense and purchased this program. The results were simply astonishing. I read this book over three times and put all words in action. Using this method, I've kept my depression at bay ever since. Up to date I'm still living happily with my girlfriend.

Clinical depression has nothing to do with religion or faith. It is a mental disorder caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Emotional depression or just having the "blues" is normal and affects EVERYONE from time to time. Whether or not you have faith in your particular religion has nothing to do with it.

Yes your spiritual life provides comfort in times of sadness but there are many other factors that contribute as well, like sorting out family, emotional , personal, financial issues etc.

Don't oversimplify human problems as, "having faith" or "not having faith". You will do more harm than good.

I feel depression is caused by a lack of faith. No personal experiences because I am too blessed to be depressed about anything.

I like the way that most people arent aware that chemicals (in balnce or not, which isnt even a relevent point) affect mood and thinking and attitude ... oddly tho it does the other way too. how else do you think the idea of recovery comes from? or how people used to before there were pills for it?

has noone felt bad and then got 'distracted by frineds or a comedy' and felt better? my case rests.

if something hapens that prompts to question and loose you faith, it can cause oyu to loose your way, so to speak, so thus may help to prompt along depression but may or may not be the sole cause (depending I suppose the extent that a person makes themselves around that faith, faithin what exactly - I had faith at one point that santa would come down the chimney and squeeze round the gas fire)

if you got really depressed and things got so bad that you started to question you faith. maybe its possible.

but we are specualting about possibiltys dude. it may or may not work that way for any one given individual.

since a persons thoughts can be rather fluid (and who knows how hard to view not to mention subject to al kinds of logic defects/types, I prefer types prevalent diffrences doesnt make it a defect till extremes prevent einteraction in my book - checkout alevel psychology very interesting, or degree level if the subject captivates you so.

Depression is caused because of faulty mind set of the person. When our thinking abilities are fixed and are forced to see life that fit the faith based rules and regulations which are dysfunctional then the soul within feels uncomfortable because it wants to express itself in a different way. Eg..certain religions consider women as weaker, who is handed over from father, to husband and if the husband dies her brother....but is this true?? NO. 52% of the work force in the west are women and the divorce rate is about 48%, and families are headed by women. And the country comes under the catogory of highly developed nations. How this happened? Because of freedom of expression. If the soul is not allowed to express freely and allowed to bloom for what it is meant to be, then we get depressed.
It is said if you feel good you think good and if you think good you do good.
Anger is a coping mechanism when the mind is unhappy, Now look around and see for yourself the state of the world and you will understand the mental health of these countries who are blowing themselves. up for faith. I hope you have the answer by now. There was an ICMR study on mental health of Kashimir (India) it was found that 80% of them had some kind of mental illness with depression topping the list. Faulty thinking patterns leads to depression.

Depends on the individual and their own faith or lack of it. I suffered from depression before I had any faith, I still suffer sometimes but my Christian faith helps me cope, after all, you are never alone with Christ in your life and one of the most effective ways of dealing with depression is talking therapy. However, before I found Christ I had faith in the organisation known as Jehovahs Witnesses and boy was my depression bad. Apparently there is four times as much mental illness in sects such as the JW's. I supppose it's a bit like the chicken and the egg, which comes first. as for the chemical imbalance bit, well. I believed that for years and took medication designed to help wth no real effect. Many psychiatrists are now questioning this theory as there is no real research to prove it.

Depression is often caused by physical problems. Once when I was depressed, I found it helpful to give up caffeine, and also increased my workouts to twice a week instead of once. If you search for depression and caffeine on Google, you will find material that shows a connection between regular caffeine use and mental anxiety and depression. I don't know if it's proven, but it helped me!

Also, a great book is "Letters to Persons in the World" by St. Francis de Sales, published by Sophia Institute Press. People would write to this bishop about their spiritual problems and he would answer them, and that's what these letters are. Sometimes it involves depression. He cautions them not to blame themselves when they are depressed. Sometimes that's just part of the human condition, and we have to bear it patiently as one of the crosses we are called upon to bear.

He also advises not to worry about things in this life! An example he gives is, when a two-year-old child builds a little house out of sticks and mud, and someone comes along and wrecks it, the child gets all upset because to him, it was a very important thing. Whereas we, as adults, realize that a mud hut has no real importance, either in this life or the next. Well guess what? Everything in this life is a mud hut! It's OK to build mud huts, but not to get ourselves too personally attached to them, remembering that in the end they amount to nothing, and what really matters is eternity.

Lack of faith is caused by instability I think. Depression can be caused by lots of things.

My depression hung around from age 19 when my parents got divorced, lasted through many other bad things too personal to talk on here, and it was under control by drugs until in one glorious moment when I felt Jesus and gave my life to him, he healed me. Christians get depression too, but I don't think it's lack of faith, it's lack of knowing who they are in Christ.
