AutoCAD, the industry standard for drafting, is written in C and it uses LISP
Visual Basic is one of the most often used computer languages.
Microsoft Office is designed to use Visual Basic and SQL Data.
Artificial Intelligence uses LISP (a complex language)
Most of the business world uses some version of C.

NASA uses the old language FORTRAN sometimes, but that is a very archaic computer language. Most companies have upgraded to Visual Basic or C++.

Computers are necessary to many engineering fields and more than just computer engineers need to be able to write code. The vehicles that drove themselves in the DARPA challenge, robots and so many other applications involve computers. Even if you can’t program very well it is important to understand computer programming so you can know the limits and what can and can’t be done. This sets the limits to what you can design and build and when you are an engineer you are always testing those limits.

From my knowledge of C I suggest that you start with Visual Basic. There are a lot of similarities and Visual Basic is a very strong programming language. Basic is designed to be the easiest computer language to learn and Visual Basic is designed to make it even easier. Most business applications use a form of C, C++ is just a higher version. Basic shares a lot of commands with C and the concepts are the same.

As a mechanical engineer, I have used Visual Basic, Matlab, and someone above me mentioned AutoCAD (which i use everyday).

Learn an FEA (finite element analysis) program like Catia or ProE if you get the chance. Seriously. (IDEAS sucks btw)

Also, I have been asked if I know HTML once or twice.

I am an Electrical Engineer and I am no longer certain if we're speaking approximately the equal SAP. SAP to me is a producing application software application that was once used at Triquint Semiconductor whilst I labored there. I might assume that to be a resume booster as firms might like to look that he's conversant in it.

programming is a very important weapon(!) for any engineer. a mech engineer is not an exception to this fact. prog languages are like the genie out of a bottle, you can makeit do anything. a prog lang heps you to do modelling and analysis. any situation in engineering can be modelled using prog languages and their analysis can be carried out. with the help of sql and data structures you can handle large volumes of data that you will come across in various situations. for instance if you are in the middle of designing a cast iron structure, you can query your database using sql for valuable information about cast iron.

but one thing that you have to keep in mind is that, nowadays various softwares specifically dedicated to design and analysis are available. examples include pro engineer, catia, auto cad, ansys etc. these tools are faster and easier to use when comapred to c,c++ etc.however an understanding of fundamentals of c and c++ will always help you to learn other languages.

i had doubts similar to that of yours, when i was in my first year mech engineering.but my 2 years of mech studies have shown me how important it is to learn prog languages.
