Flying to Chiang Rai, bus to Chiang Mai.
Out of 2 days, should I walk around Chiang Rai for 4 hours then going to Chiang Mai or use 1 day in each location?

I Want to feel that I see something different from one place to another.

There are many things to be seen in either city. Chiangrai has got nice scenic mounrtain areas outside the city limit. The 1 day you have is definitely not sufficient to travel out to places like Mae Fah Luang, Doi tung Development Projects, Mae Sa etc.

Likewise, in Chiangmai, the good places are outside the city centre, like Doin Suthep temple, Phu Phing Palace, Chiang Dao Caves Elephant Conservation Centre etc. These places need travel time. You might want to concentrate on one of them and return for the other at a later time.

You're in a rush.
Of the two, I prefer Chiang Rai. It's also a lot easier to explore on your own.

Take a guided tour of Chiang Mai. Spend the night in Chiang Rai. Next morning, rent a moped, visit the TAT office to get maps and then speed around town.

My experience - I arrived at Chiang Mai and booked myself with a daily tour group. The itinary starts early in the morning and they drives us to Chiang Rai and about 6 places of interest. Arrived back into Chiang Mai in the evening.

Why don't you just fly over top and circle around and go back? Sometimes in our rush to accomplish, we miss the pleasantries of daily life - - [ like breathing ] - it doesn't sound to me like you are going to see more than a snapshot of either place - - Why not just go to one place, have a meal, meet some people, pause to smile and maybe see a little of one place rather than next to nothing of 2 places?

ok - to answer the question - I would use a day in each location [ or more ]

- I think that part of the charm of being in Thailand is to take a break from the bustle - enjoy the easy lifestyle - well, maybe you will notice that that is the idea here and come back some time in the future when you have the time - - enjoy your visit !!

It seems to me by all the questions you have asked that you want to do so much but have so little time to do it. pick one or two places and enjoy it, come back again and do something different somewhere else. Have fun.
