It's about 7 years old now - a 27" Panasonic. It's a tube and not flat screen. It's been fine up until a few days ago - the picture suddenly goes black but I can still hear the channels. Sometimes I turn it off then back on and the picture lasts for a couple of minutes then goes out again. Sometimes the picture doesn't come back.

Luckily, I have a second TV, but it's a smaller 17". Does anyone know what's wrong with my TV? Is it that the projection tube is dying, or wires inside getting old? Or something else?

How much would it cost for a tv repair man to look at it? Or, is it just not worth it and I should just throw the TV out? - that's another ordeal, as how should it be disposed of properly?

These TVs will BLANK the picture if the screen control is too low or too high...Sounds like it's TOO Low....

I recommend it be adjusted by a TV Tech....Depending where you live, you can get it fixed for $90 if you bring it in yourself or $140 to $190 if you live 30+ miles away....

Tv Tech-mans answer is very valid but another opinion could also point to a bad soldered joint on the CRT heater connections on the neck board , this would cause the tube heater to go out and come back on intermittently. A small soldering job if you are a dab hand with a soldering iron !

It is not economically viable to pay someone to repair such a TV. If you are not trained in electronics, do not open the set up your self. There are high voltages in there.

Choices:
1. Find a similar used TV in like new condition for under $100. After Jan 2008, buy a digital converter box (ATSC) for about $20 (after government coupon).

2. For about $250 you can go to Walmart and get a similar TV which includes a digital ATSC tuner.

3. You can spend a lot more for a flat panel TV.

Old type OTA TV signals = NTSC = "Analog TV"
New type OTA TV signals = ATSC = "Digital TV" = DTV

OTA = "Over the Air" = free TV you get through your TV antenna

Get it repaired. I'm sure it will still work just as well.

I prefer Tube televisions over flat screens. Cuz then it would not be a boobtube if it was flat.

Get a new TV unless the estimate to repair this one is to your liking.

Dispose of the TV at your city's solid waste disposal facility. The company or city that picks up your trash can tell you where.

It would be more cost effective to just buy a new TV. For less than $800 you can purchase a 32" HDTV.
