Wait . . . WHOSE abuse of power?

The police or the A.C.L.U.?

The A.C.L.U.'s done more to undemine the Constitution and aid and abet criminal behavior in America than any rogue cop with a baton.

No. It's an irritation.
To your other question....
1. Keep cops away from assholes that in turn, turn them into assholes. In other words behave. That speed-ball didn't really turn you into the Incredible Hulk
2. Require that all cops have an IQ of at least 130, But don't hold your breath, the national average is 97 and municipalities recruit in that range. Those with higher IQ tend to reason before reacting and there is no place for "well, he has a gun and should I shoot since it's pointed at me...no wait, it's pointed 4.7 degrees past my shoulder... um, I could shoot, but what effects will that have on the time line? ohhhh darn..."
3. Pay them all so well that they are just the happiest people on the planet and don't have a bone to pick with anyone
4. Become a cop and work your way up into a position where you can affect reform.
5. Become an investigative reporter and go on a mission to crucify over zealous cops. Just don't call one when you are being mugged by the jerk they would normally rough up when subduing him.
6. Get elected as mayor of your city and implement a three strikes rule that apply to the misuse of authority.
There's lots of stuff you can do...

Absolutely not! In fact, I would encourage you to get your camcorder and do a ride along with me. You can record every second of my day.

However, in turn, I get to follow you around at your job for an entire shift. And every little mistake you do (or are falsely accused of doing) I get to edit and show on the 6pm news without your explanation of what really happened.

Now as to what else citizens can do? Attend council meetings. Have a voice. Attend police sponsored events. Get to know the officers in your area. If there is a citizens academy sponsored by your local department, attend it.

Too many Americans are content to sit on the sideline and ***** about the way things are going in this country. Get off your lazy a$$ and contribute to this great society.

I work in bars and other public areas a lot, and no, a camcorder would not bother me at all. I follow the law and department policy, so if you want to spend time recording me doing my job, go right ahead. However, the person who I am dealing with may not want the contact videotaped, so you might get more reaction from them than me. if I saw someone recording me contacting a citizen, I might move to a private location, simply to protect the violator's privacy.

"Abuse of power" is an interesting choice of words. Are there police officers out there who do not follow the rules? yes, but to categorize all police officers everywhere as "abusing their power" is nonsense.

People with camcorders are great. As long as they can realize a good intention for a bad situation when they see one.

If they drag the situation, or the officer's actions out of context, then they can make the officer seem more evil than Vader.

No. But only if they show the whole film and not just selected parts for media dissemination. There have been a number of times where the videos exonerated Police.

Just how outdated can you be. The ACLU is run by CONSERVATIVE former TEXAS Congressman Dick Armey. Almost all of the Challenges the ACLU has been mounting lately are based on Conservative Challenges to the Facist in the Whitehouse.

not if the officer is doing his job correctly you can have all the cameras you want but if you act within the scope of the law should not bother a police officer

No, they don't scare me in the least.

Hey Vampire, how did an organization founded by a known Communist suddenly become "Conservative"? If that were true, we'd have prayer is public schools.
