Reports are that Yates Racing has said it is willing to give up the No. 38 to Hendrick Motorsports to use. The #3 from his father plus the #8 that he ran for DEI - put them side-by-side and you get #38. So although Dale Jr. had said he might like to try the #81, #38 appears to be what he will use. source: autoracingsport.com
I think that was awfully nice of Yates to give up a number. Nice considering his step mom wouldn't give him #8.

ok i just wanna say, i am not a fan of Dale Jr. I have respect for him as a driver, and i think 38 is a good idea. I also think that he should driver #5 cuz he chose to race for Hendrick, so he should keep their number.
Just wondering what you guys think.

I agree with William. The #5 has ALOT of history that comes along with it. Heck, Terry Labonte won a championship with it. It has been with Hendrick as long as I can remember and personally I think if I were in Jr's shoes, I'd be proud to run that number.

I don't know why he can't just take the 5, it's a good number with a history. Why does Jr. have to make everything about him instead of Hendrick's heritage. If he wanted the 38 / 88 he should have signed with RYR or the the 83 and signed with Red Bull.

According to Jayski's - ESPN is now reporting (via Marty Smith on the TV show "NASCAR Now") that the transfer of the #38 from Robert Yates Racing to Hendrick Motorsports for Dale Earnhardt Jr. to use beginning in 2008 is "unlikely".
News of the transfer was originally reported by Bob Dillner of SPEED (who has, in the past, reported as "fact" things he supposedly gains from reliable sources - which then turn out to be completely false... such as last year's reports of RCR using illegal tire manipulation to gain an unfair advantage, etc.) - and was later reported by ESPN News (via ESPN.com).

Yes, it was nice of yates to offer the 38, I doubt this will happen, Marty Smith doesn't think it will.. Jr wants the 81..But at this point it might be best to take the 5...make everything new, make a total clean break, the 5 does have a great history...so take it and go win some races.. I remember Tim Brewer saying Jr needs to show up at HMS with his driving suit, and helmet, everything else needs to be all new....Yep, its a new life for Jr for the better......Go Jr Go in 2008...DEI will be a thing of the past....

I thought this was pretty cool when I read it yesterday. Bringing the #38 over to Hendrick would be symbolic for Dale Jr and a great tribute to not only his father, but his FANS! Bad thing is, jayski.com reports that this is most likely NOT to happen, per Marty Smith and ESPN. Now, That doesn't mean it won't but it's one of those rumors turned news that prolly should of just stayed a rumor.

I think 6 of these questions about the number 38 for Jr in 3 days has to be enough.

I think it is cool to keep a 8 in the number and have a 3 somewhere in it too. I like the idea of have a 8 and a 5, like the car has on it now. I would do 85 cuz 8 minus 5 equals 3.

It doesn't matter to me what number he has next year. I had hoped he'd get the 8 but if anyone else is to give up a number for Jr, I wish it was Richard Childress letting go of the number 3. After all, it'd be nice to have an Earnhardt using it and RCR will never let anyone else use it.

What ever the number that Jr. drives; REMEMBER it is the whole teem that makes a winner. The car will not drive, ,maintain, or sponsor itself!
Don't forget the rest of the team: the owner, sponsors and everyone in the crew.
GOOD LUCK.............JR....now get out there and race.

It will look funny without M&M's but I think it is a good compromise because Theresa was such an a** for not letting Dale, Jr. have the number 8.
