Welcome to the wonderful world of christian confusion. The Bible is full of contradictions.

Your question was about the Jesus / god identity crisis. Are they one or are they separate. I've met christians who have told me that whenever you are in doubt the answers are to be found in the bible.

Well I looked and this is what I found:-

John 10:30 quotes Jesus as saying "I and the Father are one."

In John 14:28 he says, "I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I."

No contradiction there then.

I often think that the greatest miracle of christianity is that people manage to read that book without laughing.

There is one scripture where Jesus denied being God. At John 10:33, his enemies said to him: :"Although being a man, you make yourself God. After quoting a scripture where human judges were called "gods," Jesus said at John 10:36: "I am God's Son."

To those who believe Jesus is God, show then John 17:3 where Jesus called his Father the only true God.

That is why many people don't believe in the trinity.

John 14:28: "You heard me say, 'I am going away and I am coming back to you.' If you loved me, you would be glad that I am going to the Father, for the Father is greater than I."

1Timothy 2:5: "For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus"

As far back as Babylonia, the worship of pagan gods grouped in threes was common. This influence was also evident in Egypt, Greece, and Rome in the centuries before, during, and after Christ. After the death of the apostles, many nontrinitarians contend that these pagan beliefs began to invade Christianity.
(Some people say that he wasn't one with God the Father until he was baptized. Also, only God can forgive sins and yet on several occasions in the gospels we see Jesus forgiving sin. Matt. 9:2, Lk. 7:48. It gets more and more confusing.)

I have two children, a daughter who is nothing like me and a son who is the image of his father.
If you have ever met my son you have met his father also they are so alike. If they answer the phone it is impossible for the people on the other end to know who they are talking to they sound and say the same things.
From long distances I have always been able to recognise my husband from the way he walks and the way he holds himself but now I have to look twice as it could be my son.

Yes, if you have met my son, you have met his father also.

Heavenly Father, Jesus Christ and the Holy Ghost are separate divine personages which are referred to as the Godhead in the Bible. They each have a different role in the plan of Salvation. They are united in purpose. When you come to know Jesus Christ, you will also know His Father, your Father.

Do you remember in circus acts where artists would swing in the air and then fly from one swing to another.

That's Christianity.

Or maybe the fellow was a part-time god, but I don't understand who the holy ghost was when he was at home.

Jim Jones said similar things over the course of his reign. He started as a preacher, began to claim that he was a god, and finally settled on the role of god to his followers.

Eventually they all start drinking their own Kool-Aid.

those who gave you scripture saying He was not God didn't understand 1 tim. 3:16,

"And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory."

this tells you that it is a mystery to many... but it CAN be understood.

who was manifest in the flesh??? Jesus
who was justified in the Spirit ??? Jesus
who preached unto the Gentiles?? Jesus
who was seen of angels??? Jesus
who was believed on in the world ??? Jesus
who was received up into glory ??? Jesus

Who was???
the above scripture says.... GOD was.
Jesus is God... God wrapped in flesh ... the one true & living God.
NOT another diety ... NOT the 2nd person in the trinity...

col 2.9 says the "fulness of the Godhead" (father, son & Holy Spirit) dwells within the body of JESUS CHRIST.
