go to a shoe store and get him sized up

A lot of the soft-soled shoes, like Robeez or Bobux go by age (0-6 month, 6-12 month, etc.). For shoes with standard numeric sizes, there's usually a chart on the back (of cheaper shoes) that converts the shoe size according to the child's age. You can use that as a guide when buying more costly pairs. After a while, though, it's just easier to get them measured. But not at Payless, those shoes tend to run small.

Once your child has been walking for a couple of weeks take them to a PROPER shoe shop to get fitted properly. Only then do you buy shoes for your toddler.

A decent shoe shop will send you away empty handed if the child isn't ready for shoes. A shop interested in making money will sell you a pair of 'cruisers' or 'pre walkers' which are rubbish and a waste of money.

My sons first shoe was a 5 but this is pretty big! 3 or 4 is probably average.

If he is not yet walking, just buy him some very soft pram shoes for 12-18months, however, if he is walking, even if he is supporting himself on furniture, you need to get him properly measured. This is extremely important as children's shoes come in different width measurement and only a trained fitter can determine this, also it is important to allow his toes to spread properly, his bones are still very soft and if put into shoes that are too tight or too small, it could cause him to have foot defects for the rest of his life. It is really important to get it right from the start. Clarks will measure his feet as will places like Russell and Bromley (not as expensive as it sounds as they stock Clarks and Startright). Children's shoe shops and department stores will also measure children's feet, places like Stead and Simpson, Shoe Express will not usually stock shoes in different width fittings so are best avoided. However, once you have his correct size, it would be okay to buy from these stores for shoes he is going to wear for a short time during the day. If you buy him trainers, at his age, he should only be in them for a few hours at a time. Bare feet is best for babies, as long as you have a clean and splinter free floor, they only need shoes when they are out and about.

Hi Susan, typically he would probably be in about a 3. This is toddler size, not kids. They are usually hanging on the walls in any kids stores.... If you go to a target or wal-mart type store they are in bins at the end of the shoe aisles. Good Luck! Oh, and don't buy too many shoes...learn from my mistakes, thier little feet grow really fast at this age!

Take him to a shoe store specialized for little kids and have him sized, he's going to be going through a lot of shoe size changes.

My daughter is 17 months and she is in a 4 wide. I would take him shoe shopping with you and size him up right there.

That is really hard to say. All are different. My son had bigger feet than most and couldn't even fit into newborn booties. I do believe I bought him a size 5 pair of Nike Pico's for his first paid when he was 1.
