I have a miniature shih-tzu, and she's WONDERFUL with young kids. She never barks, is low maintenance, and is very playful. She has a very sweet personality, and is loving to everyone. I've never seen her be aggressive to anyone, not even strangers. They're easily cage trained, and don't ever whine when you put them up. They don't ever get into trouble either. Since they're so small, they can't get up on the couch, chew your furniture, or anything like that. They have lots of energy, and really enjoy playing, but they also know when it's time to settle down. They really are very different from normal sized shih-tzus. I have normal shih-tzus, and they are very stubborn, but my miniatures give me no hassles at all. I highly reccomend them. The best part is, they don't shed, stink, and people are RARELY ever allergic to them.
I highly reccomend them, especially for families with young children.

The only hard part is getting one. Most of the breeders I know of are in the south. There's a woman in Louisiana who I would definitely look into if you're interested. She ensures that all the puppies she sells have sweet personalities, or else she won't sell them at all. There's also another woman near Pensacola, FL who I've heard is very good as well.

Good luck!

The main thing to watch out for is "barkiness" like with beagles. Aussie shepards and border collies are crazy-energetic.
I'd go to a shelter or rescue and find a smaller (35 pounds or less) animal that's 3 or (not much) older.
If you want a specific breed stay away from 'herders' and little yappy dogs, like pomeranians.
It's better to get an animal that's already been through the 'terrible twos' unless you have lots of time & patience.
A rescued dog also provides you with a great opportunity to teach the kids about the good feelings that come from helping an unwanted pet.

Small breeds are NOT made for children. If you would like a small dog breed, for kids, you could consider the Papillion or the Norfolk terrier. They are the friendliest I know, but the Papillion is a bit protective.

Best of luck finding the right dog!

beagles are great with kids.
spaniels are ok but wired for energy so they might get rough with the kids.
some terriers are good with kids but kids might not be good with them. some can be easily injured.
if you get a terrier make sure they are socialized well and the kids are taught not to torment or mishandle the dog.
well that goes for any dog you get....
but i would check the pounds as other recommended. they do have sooo many dogs that need homes. you can find a small to med sized dog that can be young puppy to younger 2-3 and get a great dog.
