I've recently heard that one needs to put in years and years of work as a loader before becoming a driver, can anyone with knowledge in this area help me out with this?

When I applied at my local UPS, they told me that drivers are never hired from outside. They always hire from within the company, and seniority counts. Apparently it's a highly desired position there.

Think about it, if you're a loader/unloader and do a crappy job, they can just let you go. But if you're a crappy driver, then everyone who has seen what you did thinks that way about the company & their hiring choices. (Not just the actual driving, but the package handling & people skills if you run into the homeowner, etc.)

I've heard that most people who are drivers worked their way up the ranks by working as sorters/loaders etc in the warehouses for many years first

however I'm not sure if there is a way to go straight to driver without doing time at the warehouse. One way to find out is to contact UPS and ask them directly.

it does take years to make driver status. I have a good friend that stayed with UPS for 12 years before he became a driver. He also worked the majority of those 12 years as a temp

I have heard that UPS uses the seniority system for promotion to driver. Quite legal.

Yes it is true. As in many jobs you work your way up to the more desire able positions. I guess hard work does pay off.
