Most rentals are prepaid. They do not charge you at the time of reservation, but at the time you pick up the car. If you cancel the reservation with less than 24 hours notice OR not show up at all, they will charge your credit card a cancellation fee ($25 and up).

The only rentals that are not pre-paid are ones that if you were in an accident and the insurance company was paying for the rental.

Just watch out for hidden fees or insurance that they might tack on... this happened to my boyfriend when he rented a car for us in Florida. The total price ended up being $70 more than what I had reserved the car for on Expedia. After you've given them your credit card info, they should give you a reciept with a list of the rental costs. Don't be afraid to ask about any odd charges that may be on there.

They will place a hold on the credit card equal to the expected amount. It's not an actual charge but it does come off the card's maximum.

The actual charge is not made until you return the car.

When you are done, and all charges have been totalled. They take your credit card info when you reserved the car. That way they have the info and can charge the account if you fail to pay.
When you take the car back, you can either use the credit card, pay cash, or write a check most of the time.

good luck.
