To counter one of the replies, I don't think he's stringing you along. You've been there for 3 years and he's assuming that you're happy. You say that you want/need a verbal commitment...then ask for one. I'm sure he'll probably say something like, "sure, you're my girl"...or words to that effect. If you need more, ask for it. It's your life and your right...just like it's his right not to claim you without your "approval".

If this has been going on for years now and you still don't know then you need to find a way to ask but be discrete about it. Maybe you could get a friend to ask if he and his girlfriend (you) would like to do something, or something like that. If he responds with the fact that he has no girlfriend then you know. Asking him directly could be problematic because of the pressure it may put on him. If you two are close and think it wouldn't cause strain to the relationship then I retract my previous statement and think you should ask him directly. Do something though. You can't just sit there.

Definitely ask. If he hasn't mentioned exclusivity by now, he probably figures "Why buy the cow when you can get the milk for free?" Be prepared for his answer. and be prepared to walk away and stay away. If he is seeing other women he doesn't respect you and that is key to a good relationship.

My question is why haven't you guys made it official after a few years? I think that you should ask him what you two are. You shouldn't assume because that leaves a lot of room for a misunderstanding.

I learned the hard way, nothing is official until you flat out state it. You'll get hurt when it's broken off and you find out you where just a fling when all this time you thought you were bf/gf.

If it's been going on for years you definately need to ask him what's going on. It's a dreaded conversation, I know, but if it's going nowhere than you need to know NOW so you can move on!

If it's been going on for years then you had better ask asap. Sounds like he's stringing you along if you don't know for sure and it's been years.
