Not at all! I think it's a wonderful idea. Like you said, you want them to relax and have a good time, and at really formal affairs, that rarely happens. Just make sure that they're expecting a BBQ, so they don't show up in suits and fancy dresses.
We had a destination wedding weekend before last, and then our reception will be taking place on the 15th. It's going to be a BBQ/cookout type thing, with none of the 'typical' reception thigns going on except for cutting the cake. It will suit us perfectly.

Like the other person said, it sounds more like a bridal shower, or less formal type of party setting that a wedding is expected to be. It is your wedding day, and you can do whatever you choose but BBQ (especially ribs and chicken) is messy. Messy BBQ sauce and white dresses (or any nice clothing) don't really mesh, if you know what I mean. I've seen BBQ weddings go well, but I've seen many more look like something out of redneck weddings. My suggestion is to stick with less messy BBQ fare, think about things that require a knife and fork, rather than a bib. And definately use real ceramic plates. Anything less would make it more like a typical laid back party than your wedding reception. (And it's better for the environment).

Great idea, there a some wonderful catering companies that do BBQ/cook out parties that could be used for a reception. Hire one of these to do all the cooking and serving so that your guests will be able to serve themselves and have a good time. Don't forget a canopy for incliment weather.

Having a BBQ cook out isn't tacky! We are doing that very thing in 4 weeks. My FH and I are getting married in Vegas and coming home to have a BBQ pool party the following week to celebrate with family and friends. We are having it catered and having a cake, but thats the extent of "traditional" reception. We wanted our guests to enjoy themselves and relax - told everybody to wear shorts, flip flops, etc and bring towels and sunblock!
I'll be wearing a hawaiian print dress and my hubby will wear an aloha shirt (but NOT matching!)
Congrats and good luck!

My fiance and I are doing soemthing similar we are getting married on the beach in Anna MAria Island FLorida next year we rented a house as like a family vacation and we are having a barbecue back at the house after the ceremony on the beach.we didnt want to spend thousands of dollars to have a wedding like everyone else. WE wanted so something memorable. If you dont want to feel rushed then that is the best way OR fiancially broke. The average wedding is like 40 grand nowadays ouch

There is no etiquette reason why "to be followed by a small dance" (meaing a grand ball and reception) can't be changed to "to be followed by BBQ with all the trimmings."
If you want people to wear "sauce friendly" clothing, then give them explicit instruction to do so. This is one case where I WILL endorce the idea of guests being "bossed around" as to their attire.

sounds great....I was married at a ranch in the country...we had a buffet style BBQ, margarita machine, kegs, paper plates and lots of family. very relaxed no stress.....I would(if possible) hire a BBQ company to cater it.
we still had a DJ, lights, dance floor, photographer all the typical stuff you would find at a "reception"

Your reception may take any form, so long as it is appropriate to the level of formality you have chosen for the day and takes into account the comfort of your guests.
Unless you're holding a black tie wedding, a BBQ reception is perfectly proper and fitting.
Include as many or as few of the standard reception activities as you please, and have a good time.

It is your day you should do what ever you want. I would caution them to bring a comfortable change of clothes for the bbq. I know my wedding dress is the hottest thing I have ever worn. Plus I wouldn't want to have ruined it by dripping ketchup on it. Just have a wonderful day. You should hand out cameras to your guests. Let them take lots of candid shots.
