There are a lot, although for me the best (according to your criteria given) are The Michelangelo (51st east) and the Blakely. Look for them at Tripadvisor and you'll see that they have wonderful reviews and thet are so classy, (not cheap)m quiet and yet in the middle of the action.
Totally agree with Professor C!!! recently I've noticed a lot of people giving thumbs down just for pleasure, in order to make fun of top contributers, or simply out of spite. It's not only uncool, it's so stupid and immature. And not only in this category, in most of the categories in travel and food also. It makes people not want to participate more.....

The Benjamin or the Omni Berkshire Place, both in midtown and are discreet, quiet, and offer impeccable service. I have been to both hotels on numerous occasions even though I live here and would recommend both to my family and friends when price is not a concern. I prefer the Benjamin, it is smaller overall and more out of the way than the Omni and the average room is bigger at the Benjamin. The Benjamin's concierge and front desk staff are some of the best in New York, very professional and old-school service. Avoid Times Square if you are looking for quiet and classy, while there are many nice properties there, getting in and out and dealing with the crowds is is not worth it for what you are looking for.

No such thing as a quiet place in Manhattan, but as far as hotels, there is the Ritz/Carlton, Waldorf, Hotel Pennsylvania, The Millenium Hilton, The Marriot......also a bunch in the Times Square area.
And I say "ditto" to Processor C!

The 'W' - for pure luxury.
For safety (and its nice as well) Hilton Times Square, their LOBBY is on the 22nd floor- they screen those trying to go up in the elevator.
Excuse ME why all the thumbs down ON EVERYONE? He asked for an opinion- we gave - if anyone knows something bad about the hotels mentioned say it. BUT everyone is entitled to an opinion. We each value different things in a hotel. I stated what I valued- it may not be the same as you but its NOT wrong.

I mean if price is no issue why not stay at the Waldorf. Personally, I have stayed at hte Hilton in Midtown and it was very nice and I felt it was peaceful.
