I do love those red onions for salad and such, but my absolute favorite is the Vidalia. I love them on salad, made into a blooming onion, sauteed for steak dinner etc. And yes Leeks and shallots are in the "onion family"

I love reds the best. Then green onions, shallots and leeks. White or yellow onions (not Vidalia or Walla Walla) are at the bottom of the list. The reds are just a bit sweeter than whites and yellows.

Bermudas (the red ones) tend to be especially sweet, but they don't keep very well. They're my favorite.
Walla Walla and Vidalia onions are just Grano or Granex variety onions. The reason they're good is because they are grown in depleted soil; if they are grown in ordinary soil, the onion uses the sulfur in the soil to make itself hot. It also helps if there's lots of rain while it's growing; slow growing onions (and radishes, etc.) get very hot.
Green onions are just immature onions. Leeks are a different plant in the allium family. So are shallots and chives.

I love onions. I use green onions (scallions) on or in just about anything - especially asian and mexican foods, and salads. I prefer purple (red) onions for things that showcase the onion flavor, and white onions for things that just need a touch or a taste.... Shallots are great too, but have a somewhat different and stronger taste to them, so you need to be careful when using them not to use too much.

I like Vidalias the best. They are great any way - fried, sauteed, raw ... the only set back is they have a limited growing season .
