One may wish this place to be a neutral ground for the sharing of different ideas and viewpoints, but unfortunately it is not. The beliefs that are seen here are an integral part of the people that they belong to. So, far from a discussion as benign as that about how the weather is, we have people verbally dueling and stabbing and dodging each other.
There are some of us, however, secure enough with ourselves to at least acknowledge that other perspectives do exist, even if they are not palatable to us, individually.
To these people--a salute is in order.

Seems ironic to you? Perhaps, but it seems inevitable to me. It's the category that people feel most deeply. It's also apparently the one which most runs on opinions rather than facts. We do share facts as well, of course, but not nearly so much as, for example, Chemistry.

No it is not ironic, it is entirely predictable.
This has nothing to do with religion or lack of religious views. It has everything to do with intolerance for the views of people who think differently.

Because so many angry atheists, and religion haters come here just spoiling for a fight. Unfortunately, when they encounter me, they quickly tuck their tails between their legs and run away because they end up looking silly.

You haven't spent much time in "Government and Politics," have you? The insults there are much more personal - here we insult each others' god(s) but in G&P they insult each other's intelligence, as well as each others' favorite leaders. They give out fewer stars, too.

ironic no... the bible foretells of those who will not believe... and to answer the first part of the question, i believe it is because this is the most personal passion ( religion / no religion ) we as humans face.

Perceptions and projections of minds that are soak in self-cherishment. Cultivate a calmer mind and it'll seem less "angry and abusive".
