Righeous anger to me is warrented when:

1. People's human rights are being violated because of prejudice, hatred and ignorance

2. The earth is being polluted

3. Children are molested or harmed

4. Women are violated or beaten

5. My family is threatened or my community, neighbours, country

6. My personal freedom is being violated

There are many reasons to feel righteous anger. However, anger like any emotion, carries an energy and motivating force can be turned into something positive or negative depending on how you express it.

"Righteous" is a human judgment and totally subjective. What is "righteous" to you may seem petty or mean to someone else. Anger is something we all feel, whether it is warranted or not.

It is how you deal with this anger that is important. Do you start a fight, or do you try to communicate? Do you talk smack behind someone's back, or do you respectfully resolve your issues?

It is the action and not the emotion that has ethical value.

It's not about anger, it's about responsibility. Those righteous enough to deal out justice outside of the court system are few and the elite.

Nothing can be said about those who follow every aspect of the ideas which we call "law".

For example: If I caught someone trying to kill my family, I would most definitely tie them up, cut out their larynx, and torture them until they learn NOT to treat others badly. That's responsibility and punishment. Anger is what happens when someone has an overactive medulla oblongata, and at the wrong time, can cause a person to snap.

Breaking it down...When you are in right standing before God and you get angry. I know, to simple of an answer for most people.

Often, we are angry in response to our own selfishness. That is the real problem in discovering righteous anger.

God gave emotions, including anger. It is okay to get angry.

It is not okay to let anger turn into rage. We find rage when we allow the sun to go down on our anger, meditate anger and let it fester on the inside.

I've seen some who seem to be addicted to righteous indignation; it is like a drug to them. In those cases, they will seek out anything that sparks their anger. Fred Phelps is the most extreme example. He is such an anger addict that he does everything in his power to make people just as angry at him, so he can feed off the escalating hatred.

When God or His commandments are defiled, then righteous anger is - well- righteous. ie Jesus overturning the moneychanger's tables because they were defiling the Temple. If God can get angry for a just cause, so can we - otherwise social wrongs would never be put right. We are God's hands and feet in the world.....

Unless you're a bodhisattva and fully compassionate, anger is never really "warranted" because such a reaction usually stems from a mind that is still soaked in ego-cherishing or self-cherishment. Becoming a Bodhisattva isn't easy, it takes years of practice in being altruistic, patient, compassionate and lots of other "stuff".
