For example, I recently noticed that the Dalai Lama is called "His Holiness." However, Buddhists do not believe in a deity. What makes him holy if there is no supernatural being to back it up?

What is holiness to you? Where does it come from?

"Holy" would have to be thought of as a word depicting "worthy of praise." One might look at a work of art and call it "the holy masterpiece" of a particular artist, i.e., the "all" of his ability and talent.

I suspect it is all in the mind of the one who chooses to use the word in describing the value he places upon an object he praises completely, that it represents all of his desire and being.

We Buddhists believe in deities, just not in the sense that most believe a deity to be (i.e. not omnipotent, which is illogical to us). "Holy" is a word that doesn't translate well from Eastern to Western connotations a lot of times... I'd say to someone who's not aware: He's extremely virtuous, compassionate, altruistic, etc.

Hope this helps you understand better.

Another term is "blessed." It means we are offering respect. But holiness does not rely on a monotheistic God to confer it, as far as I can see. It comes with being spiritually developed.

In the absense of a supreme or divine being, I would equate being holy to being sacred.

to me, the entire universe is holy and sacred.

that's the way I choose to perceive it - not that only certain people, places, things are 'holier' than others.

Nothing.

Holiness comes from God.
