If you are talking about Christianity, the bible teaches us that god created us and deserves to be worshiped.

Religions teach "That" but not the bible. Religion is man-made but Christianity is God-made.

What will send a person to hell - not God. Men/Women have a choice to choose life or death.

The scriptures says in II Peter 3:9 - The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

The Lord doesn't want anyone to perish he wants them to experience his genuine love through repentance - (1) acknowledge that God sent Jesus to died on the cross (2) admit your a sinner (3) repent (4) ask Christ to come into your heart and be your Lord and Savior (5) and thank him, praise Him for what he has done.

Go to church and be among other believers so you can be strengthen in your new walk with Christ. Get in the word (Bible) for it is your weapon for life (against the enemy). The scriptures will help you to grow in the Lord and know how to live this christian life.

WE are to reverence God - not a fear as in being afraid.
WE are to worship God - because all the praise and glory belongs to Him.
WE are to love God - with ALL our Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength.

I can't speak as much an authority for other religions besides Christianity, but in general, I think it might seem odd at first glance, but one must remember that religions in general assume some sort of deity or deities who either made the universe (including people) and therefore have ownership of them and can judge them according to the standards they set or they are higher in the order of the universe (in the case of polytheistic religions) and therefore have rights to judge those lesser in the universe. A prevalent view in the U.S. and other Western countries (and I would say probably even other countries) is materialism, which goes with the assumption that there isn't a God or god and that as people we just happen to be happily endowed with certain abilities to enjoy our world without having to answer to any higher authority except those humanly imposed. Religions tend to assume a higher authority, and some of them (including Christianity) have a belief in sin, which is a disturbance in the harmony of the universe, and more importantly a desecration of the God's (or god's or gods') holiness, and therefore is similar to spitting in the face of such a deity. The belief in sin of late has fallen out of vogue. Notice how rarely the word is used in our modern times outside of religious contexts. It is this sin that causes the deity to send his subjects who have indulged in it rather than in His (or his or her) glorification. In the case of Christianity, God is 100% holy and pure and since we die and our souls are immortal, where would a person who has sinned go except away from the presence of this holy God? That place is called hell.

The Bible teaches that man's sin created a separation from the Holy righteous God. Since Heaven is a place of purity and righteousness because of His presence there, then impurity and unrighteousness cannot be there. Man sends himself to hell. God offers redemption in Jesus Christ. His righteous life and sacrifice is the substitute for our sins. When we receive Him as our Savior, the bible says that His righteousness is imputed to us. Therefore we do not go to hell because of our unrighteousness, we go to Heaven on the merits of His righteousness.

"Why does atheism teach you that you can live any way you want and never be held accountable?"

What you know about atheism could fill a thimble and have room left over. What makes you think atheists aren't held accountable for their actions? We most certainly are. We just don't believe we'll be "punished" by an invisible sky pixie (for our actions on Earth) when we die.

And to answer the question....the threats of hell are nothing more than scare tactics used by the early church to control the masses. Keep people afraid and they'll do whatever you want them to, give you whatever they have, and follow you anywhere.

Well, that's not exactly theologically correct from a Christian point of view.

Christianity teaches that sin separates mankind from God.

In Jesus' parable of the rich man and Lazarus, did he say the wicked man was sent to Hell by God? No! He just said that was where he was. He got there of his own choices and volition.

Contrary to the wisdom of my brothers and sisters answering this question, I find most rebel against the concept of hell rather than indoctrinated by it. I rarely preach hell though my congregation knows that I accept its reality. God doesn't intend that we be frightened or threatened into faith.

But your question is a good one. Let me offer an illustration. I invite you to my home for dinner and fellowship. During the time that you are there you insult me and my family. You tell me that I'm not real and you don't like my home. I ask you not to smoke in my home and you puff away telling me that you don't have to live by my rules. Would I be just in forbidding you to enter my home anymore?

God is the creator of all that is. He created us to share this world with him and to love him. When we ignored God and rejected his rules, he sent his Son to remove our sins and to show us how to live with him and each other in peace and harmony. For those who reject this final gift, doesn't God have the right to deny them entrance into the glory of his Kingdom?

God does not send anyone to hell. Hell is the absence of God. In our lives we either choose the presence of God or the absence of God.

The only way he will send you to hell is if you don't give your life to him your not suppost to fear God your suppost to love and it's always good to worship him.

Why does atheism teach you that you can live any way you want and never be held accountable?

The person above me is absolutely correct. You send yourself to hell because God made you with the capacity to make your own decisions in life.
