When I was in an abusive relationship, my boyfriend was a Christian (Southern Baptist to be exact).

When my best friend was in an abusive relationship, her boyfriend was a Christian (Mormon).

My co-worker is in an abusive relationship and her boyfriend is (you guessed it) a Christian.

I known many people who have been in abusive relationships and I've never known the abuser to be a non-Christian.

That is not to say that all Christian men (or boys) are abusive. This only proves the point that Christians are no more moral or immoral than non-Christians.

The absolute saddest part of seeing a Christian woman in an abusive marriage is when the woman feels like she would be sinning if she left her husband. I have seen too many times (even here on Yahoo Answers) women who felt like they shouldn't leave their abusive husbands because they are supposed to (according to the Bible) obey and submit to their husbands. It makes me so sad for them...to know they are blinded by this supposed faith and are willing to subject themselves to mental, physical, and emotional abuse in the name of 'faith'.

Actually this is a myth about domestic violence - one of many myths. Abusers can be religious, christian, muslim, scientologists, any religion you name can have abusers practicing it. Another common myth is financial status of abusers. Some believe only poor people are abusers. This is untrue also. Abusers come from all walks of life, all types of careers, and all types of belief systems. There are many common bonds among abusers, yet so many things different. Another common myth is that an abuser is addicted to substances (drugs or alcohol). They can be, but this is not required.

The common thread among all abusers is the sense of entitlement. They feel they are right because they are entitled to treat the woman the way they do.

Hope this helps some.

Domestic violence and other types of abuse are social illnesses that usually get passed along from one generation to the next; much in the same way religious indoctrination does although there is no direct correlation between them.

It is much like my Irish-catholic ancestors - most of the men were highly abusive alcoholics who married women who they knew they could dominate. In that instance, the religion gave them them an excuse because they merely went to confession and then were absolved of their 'sin' by a priest, but the diseases weren't cured because religion merely provided the excuse for continuing the behavior.

In such an instance, I think the abuser who has 'religion' is the the one in which it is harder to make them see they have a problem.

Coffeepot... It's not just a guy thing.
Men are now starting to report the abuse by women, too.

It's a human thing.

We're (humans) hard-wired for violence.

Sadly not everyone practices what they preach. In those cases they are proving what kind of person they really are not just what kind of person they say they are.

We don't teach people how to avoid it, only to end it when it starts.

If I ever catch my son hitting a woman, God will be the LAST of his worries.
