Which book of the Bible do you think gives the best overview of God's message? I heard the Book of Mark but I'm not sure.

Yes I've read most of it. But I have a friend that is very new to the Bible that could use an overview.

The Gospel According to John seems to be the favorite here...

But I think for a newbie, I would go with Luke for a Gospel. It's a bit easier to take in and a bit more extensive in it's coverage. John has some passages that are a bit much for a new believer. Any of the four would be good, but Luke does tend to read more like a history.

Romans is a great book for new Christians. Most of Paul's epistles were written to churches he had visited and he knew the problems they were facing. So he wrote them to address certain issues. Romans, however, he wrote before he got there, so it is a more general "overview" of things. Since he did not know the specific issues the church in Rome was facing, he just kinda covered everything.

Good luck with your friend, and God bless.

One book of the Bible would leave out quite a bit. Reading one of the gospel accounts would give an overview of Jesus' earthly life and ministry, but it is important to know that all of the details of his life were foretold in earlier prophetic books. It is also important to understand his lineage, that he is the "lion of Judah" and the "twig from the stump of Jesse". He is the one who had the legal right to the Davidic kingship.
(Genesis 49:8, Isaiah 111 :Ezekiel 29:27) One also needs to understand the law in order to appreciate the reason Jesus was so strong in his condemnation of them.

It depends:

John is good to get an understanding of Christ as the Son of God.

Romans is good to go over all the main doctrines of the faith.

However, I would go with Galatians. Just to at least get them to chapter 5 verse 1:

It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.

Looking back Galatians is the one book I wish I would have studied sooner. It would have saved me a lot of frustration. Law and Grace, Legalism and License. It's good to get those ideas squared away early.

Just my opinion Mandy.

LOL...why are so many people telling you to have your friend read books from the Old Testament??? I would start off with John maybe, or Mark. And once I've read the New Testament and have a good grasp on that, I would go back and read the Old Testament - the Old Testament is to be revered, but not followed, Jesus came and replaced the Torrah. So I wouldn't read that first off. It is very complicated and takes years of study to truly get all the nuances, etc. out of the verses.

Mandy,
I suggest that she Begin by reading the Gospel of John. It is very thorough and is a great beginning book to read. The Gospels are all good beginning books but I would begin with that one. Read and study with her ifr you are able to do so. This will strengthen her and allow her to begin a schedule of reading and studying with others. We should be going out and studying with others constantly as the first century Christians did. Have a wonderful week.
Thanks,
Eds

Titus

Because she could see the way MEN and
WOMEN should walk and to work where she could get good learning and how to stay away meaningless Q/A's that don't help
in her faith. Titus has something for and from everyone which could help her keep focused on the real truths of the bible

I like the gospel of Mark. Any of the gospel is fine. Acts is a good read for a new Christian too.

Gospel of John. That's typically the book given to new believers. It focuses more on the nature of the Messiah (God's unique Son), and salvation.
