RE:
Is there a free program similar to Microsoft Word?
I'm a little annoyed with Microsoft in general, and especially Microsoft Word. I would like a program in which I can designate what I want the margins of my page to automatically be every time, so that I don't have to change the margins every single time. I'm so sick of forgetting to...

You can set that, as well as many other settings, in Word. But if you want an alternative, get OpenOffice.org. It's free & compatible with MS Office, and I think has all the parts that Office has http://www.openoffice.org/

Instead of switching, you should create a template document with all the margins set.
When you create a new document, create one based from the template, that way you'll always have the correct margins, fonts, etc.
If you're still forgetful (to choose the template), you can override Word's default template (named Normal.dot). This way, all new documents are based on the overridden template.

Try Open Office, it is a full replacement for MS Office and works really well. It is full function with a spread sheet, presentation software(powerpoint) and is pretty much compatable with MS Office for reading office files.

http://openoffice.org does everything Word, Excel and Powerpoint does for free....
But have you considered just making a style sheet in Word with margins and other preferences you need preset for your papers? That way you do not have to remember to alter them each time....
(Because Open Office is not going to remember to change your margins for you either, unless you set up a style sheet....)
