You're supposed to stop before the front of the car passes where the sign is, then edge out slowly if you can't see oncoming traffic before you make the turn or proceed on the road

Legally, you have to stop before the nose of your car passes the stop sign. If your view is blocked by an object, stop at the stop sign first and then slowly inch your way out until you can see past the obstruction.

In California you do the California Roll, but watch out and make sure your reflexes are good casue you may have to dodge some cross traffic or the police waiting to ticket people that do California Rolls.
And those tickets are EXPENSIVE!
So I guess its best to stop with front of car inline with the sign and proceed with caution.
