Big lots depending on where you are can have some decent quality stuff. It's up to you. Also with the stuff in the other stores you mentioned...if there is something that you don't like because of the color, perhaps you can paint it or disguise it with an inexpensive piece of fabric like a curtain panel. If you are handy with a sewing machine, you can use curtain panels to make pillow covers. Focus on the essentials that your current budget will allow and look for items that can serve more than one purpose like a table with adjustable height. Look online at places like overstock or amazon since they offer free or low cost shipping. Check with IKEA since you can paint some of the plainer stuff.
Work on the must haves and add your personality as your budget allows. Good luck and have fun.

I *LOVE* Big Lots. I bought a sofa there six years ago, and it's still holding up. Can't complain about the quality *at all*.
Thing about Big Lots is they get their merchandise from the same manufacturers as other furniture retailers, it's just surplus that no one else has room/need for.
Here's another site with great quality stuff for cheap. It's all new, just discounted for liquidation:

I've never gotten sick from packaged food from any store. In fact, if food is sitting in our cupboard, and past the expiration date, I look at it, but if nothing is obviously wrong, I eat it, anyway. No problems. If a can swells, or the food looks decomposed, obviously, don't eat it. Or if it smells wrong, don't eat it. Other than that, I think the food from a closeout store is fine. Just think, if people actually were to get sick, there would be scandals, I would think. And stuff like shampoo that never goes into your body, never fear.

Big lots and similar places buy discontinued and seconds items from manufacturers. So there is nothing really wrong with the items. They just were not up to the original makers standards or no longer the current style.

They have nice stuff there. I am not on a college budget, but definitely a budget. You can also find stuff at dollar stores, yard sales and thrift stores. I am a decorator and can make things look nice, if you have a nac for it you can make your new apartment look very nice. Good luck

Depends on your budget and your tastes. I have found good quality furniture at Thrift stores. You decide if it is "too used" for you. I buy used furniture (mostly wood) and refinish it for resale. For a few bucks and some elbow grease, I get about 3 times my money back.
