I just bought a used 2002 Dodge Ram. The dealer only had one key that worked the ignition, the other key unlocked the doors and would start the truck but after a few seconds it would turn off. Why is this? I heard it has a chip in it or it is programmed and the only way to get another one is from the dealer, is this true and if so about how much do they cost? Thanks.

Your vehicle has an anti-theft sentry key. The chip sends the signal to the immobilizer module to let it know it is the owner that is trying to start the car, not just someone that hacked into the ignition. That key costs about $50-$60 each and then it needs to be programmed and that costs extra. Some locksmiths have these keys but yes it would be easier to get them from the dealer. By the way, the vehicle has to be present with the new key to be programmed to it.

If your key has a transmitter in it then you can get a copy made at walmart for about $2 or less but it will not work on the ignition at all, not even for the radio. To get another real key made would be very expensive, probably about $200 at the dealership. I priced my honda civic key recently and it was $145. Ridiculous!

True - dealer is the only place that carries the chipped keys.

They range from 20-50.00 on up

Your Dodge should be less then 20.00
