I have been on many different anti-depressants for years and I also have anxiety disorder(and social). What has helped me the most is a combination of clonazepam(for anxiety) along with effexor XR for both severe depression and anxiety. I have also had a lot of counseling. This is not a cure by a long-shot, but it does take the edge off. I am also on a few other psychiatric meds for other reasons.
If I were you I would go to a psychiatrist, your symptoms are what they specialize in.
When I first went on medications it was through a family doctor, When I started going to a psychiatrist, it turned out that the family doctor was under-medicating me & I was not getting the full benefit of the meds.
Not all antidepressants work the same for everyone, it is sort of hit and miss until you get on one that works best for you.
I hope things get better for you.

THERE ARE MEDS THAT CAN TREAT BOTH SOCIAL ANXIETY DISORDER AND DEPRESSION. The Dr will have to assess your entire problem to see if one med can do the job. It is not uncommon to be on 2 or more meds. Just make it plain to the Dr that you would like to keep the amount of meds to as few as possible. The DR will usually work with you. Maybe you can start on just 1 and see what kind of results you get. or start on a couple and go down as your symptoms get under con troll. It takes several weeks to get the full results of these meds. If you are miserable, You may want to follow the DR initial advise and then go down as you improve. I HAVE SEEN MANY PEOPLE GO DOWN TO 1 OR 2 MEDS. It is possible.

you have to be diagnosed first to be able to get the medicines...it's not over-the-counter medications.
but to answer your questions, most anti-depressants can also help you with the anxiety problems. the most popular anti-anxiety drug i know of is valium...which can also be used as a muscle relaxant. the most popular anti-depressant is Prozac which causes impotence in men.
i think you've been reading too many psych books and have started diagnosing yourself..it's normal to have depression every now and then and to have anxiety. i have it every month before my period.... it usually disappears if i exercise regularly...the body sends out hormones that makes you feel good.
anyway.... try something else first like yoga, jogging or breathing exercises. coz most anti-depressants have serious side effects like impotence, heart problems, even motor coordination problems which is why most people with depression don't take their meds because it makes them more uncomfortable at first.
it's normal to be a little crazy sometimes...we're human after all.

no, one pill will do the trick, i have depression and a panic disorder and i take celexa 20 mg. They may prescribe you an antianxiety med like buspar or xanax to take with it if you have like an uncontrollable anxiety attack or something it will calm you down in 15-30 min. good luck

I took Paxil CR and had a ton of side effects that were not good. I currently take Effexor for the same things that you have. I used to take Celexa and also tried Lexapro. I have found the Effexor works the best for me. Sometimes it takes some tweaking of the dosages to get it right.

Paxil is probably the right med for you. It is indicated both for depression and social anxiety disorder.
Best of luck to you in your treatment,

Paxil is an SSRI that can treat both depression and anxiety disorders.
Separately, benzodiazepines can treat anxiety issues but they are addicting.
