I currently have an Italian leather couch for the kids area but the grooves in the leather are wearing out. Despite the fact that leather is easiest to clean after the kids, I do not want to replace with another leather couch. I feel that leather is cold in winter and sticky in summer. Instead I would like some kind of a fabric where it is easy to clean any spills, popcorn and other dirt marks.

Microfiber is great to have with kids. I used to work as a furniture salesperson and the company I would work for would actually let us draw on the furniture with ink pens to show how easy it is to clean (with rubbing alcohol). Many sales people work off of comission so they will try to sell you on getting fabric protection on microfiber and it is not needed (it is just a way to make the sell worth more, meaning the store and the sales person gets more money), I have 5 kids and have stone (almost white) microfiber furniture a sofa and two recliners and have had to for two years and it still does not have a stain so that is what I would recommend. I hope this helped.

Check with a good re-upholstery shop in your area. One of the fabrics I recommend for durability, cleanability, comfort, and value is a nylon velvet - Two of the suppliers are Burch and Pacific Hide and Leather. Top this off by treating the fabric with Fabric Coate by Guardsman, a permanent stain protectant.

Why not just get a denim slipcover or microfiber slipcover that you can always throw in the wash if it gets dirty ! That means you could still keep the sofa for the kids but, it would function better for the family...good luck

AG , wonderful polyester fabrics are available in the stores nowadays. instead of upholstery try curtain material which is heavy.go for colours which are bright and feel cottonish.get removable ones made that can go straight in the washing machine and no ironing required. and hey presto your prob is solved. be careful of fire though.

How about some bean bags for each of the kids, in their own colors, and afer they are done, if a mess, hose it down, dry, then stack them for future use. No point in spending a fortune if they will be doing what you described.
