The Miss Teen USA contestant screwed up the question and answer portion of her contest. See the following: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WALIARHHLII.
Yesterday, her face was plastered all over the cable networks, MSNBC, Foxnews, CNN, and all the morning news programs. I couldn't help but think how callous that was. They were laughing and mocking the poor girl.
Did anyone else find that to be in incredibly poor taste?

Poor taste- probably. The girl is only 16. Plus, we have all said something that makes us look stupid; you can't judge a person's intelligence from one comment. Fortunately, she's attractive which goes a long way in this world.

What did she say? I didn't see the pageant. Also, I'm at work and YouTube is a blocked website here.
EDIT: Once again, I can't look at anything on YouTube because that is a blocked site where I work. Which contestant was it? I'm Googling it but I can't find anything. All I'm getting are sites saying Colorado won.
EDIT2: Wait.... Judging by other answers, I think you're talking about the girl who was asked why she thinks so many Americans can't locate the United States on a map or something like that (I had to deduce this one for myself since you never posted which girl it was or what she said even though I stated TWICE that I can't look at YouTube from my work computer). I heard about that on the radio yesterday. I don't think I've ever laughed so hard in my life! The question wasn't even hard! I'm sorry, but her answer deserved to be laughed at. So what if she's 16? That "poor girl" knew she'd be asked questions like that. It reminded me of that part on Miss Congeniality when that girl was asked to describe the perfect date and she said "April 26th".

If that doesn't prove how bad the education system is in America I don't even know what is. Just by everything she said, she seems extremely uneducated. Why send a girl that can barely talk to represent an entire state? She just proves that you can be beautiful, but not bright.
Getting back to your question, honestly, I don't believe it is in poor taste. If they do something stupid its going to be broadcast to the world, especially if it is televised. Its just something they should learn to deal with.

beautiful to a factor, yet as a rule creepy and irritating, fairly once you hear them communicate with thier little diva attitudes. those childrens are on a direction to destruction. My daughter (she's one) ought to be in pageants, yet I swear she would be all organic (no makeup) and if I see that physique of innovations it will be the tip of it. On 2nd concept, i think of i will not positioned here in era, in all probability suitable for all in contact.

Get in front of the media, you better have a polished answer if you are going to speak. She represents a town, doesn't she? That's embarrassing to send someone who isn't graceful in their attitude, speech, walk, and thought to a major presentation. She needs to practice rebuttal even during her mess-up. I've seen people know how to do that; and they come out being charming. Back to the drawing board on this one.

Not American here and haven't lived there. But I do find these beauty pageants contest as rather vulgar. It hard to believe this day and age when women have advance in terms of equality. Is there a need for these beauty contest?

Not really. I saw it twice on a comedy show called David Letterman. I found it pretty funny. But then again we should always make fun of blonds.

She was nervous. If she could do it over.. I'm sure she'd have a different answer. We have all made a stupid comment... it's just that most of us didn't have a camera and a million viewers to see it. It was funny though. Well, that is my 2 cents worth... sorry, I have to go, I'm off to the store to buy a map.

I agree but if you're going to put yourself out there like that you have to learn to take it. The news has gotten so ridiculous. All they can do is report on superficial mishaps and interview mindless fat tubs of diarrhea like Michael Moore as if he has anything to offer to society.
