Yes, I had the 590 mariner and it surpassed all my expectations. The military issued 590's (alongside Remingtons) for a while. The Mossberg guns are all variations on the same Mossberg patents, and are mechanically very similar. Older models only had a single action bar, and sometimes bind up slowing a follow up shot, but this was remedied in the late 1980's with the addition of a second action bar, present on all newer models.
It's a good gun, at a good price. Once they added a second action bar to reduce binding, the Mossberg pump shotgun really came into it's own. 8 rounds of 12 guage ain't nuthin' to sneeze at! That's some firepower!

Yes, one of the best at an affordable price.
I'd load it with BB or No. 4 buck to keep the wall penetration to a minimum if you're gonna use it for home defense.
There is a low power buckshot cartridge available on the market that works fine in pumps but sucks in semiautos.
