Does it only happen a night?
It sounds like a muscle spasm. Try to exercise the leg lightly during the day. If it cramps again, tell your BF to lie on his back and stretch his legs. Relax after 5 seconds and stretch again. Repeat until pain goes away. Oh, and drink a lot of water during the day.

Legs are the first place your body targets when you are dehydrated. Drink lots of water! I recommend purified water and Mineral Water mixed 50/50. The Mineral Water is going to put back into the muscles the minerals they are losing on a daily basis. You must drink beyond your thirst to get the benefits of hydration.
I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day. Realize that exercise, ambient temperature, and state of health affect the water needs of your body.
In the evening take a hot bath with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. Afterwards, if you have something shaped like a cylinder and made out of hard material (think of a large rolling pin you would use for pizza dough or something) place it under your leg and push down and roll it back and forth...this should massage the spasms out of your leg. It will hurt while you're doing it, but more so the type of pain that actually feels good, in the long run. Afterwards massage an analgesic cream into the area. You will start feeling better very quickly.

The first thing you should do is stretch the contracted muscle. Try to stand up and straighten out your leg and massage your leg to get the blood flowing. The muscle may try to contract again almost instantly so keep it straight and continue to massage it for five or ten minutes. If your agonised screams have woken up your partner, you may be able to get help with the massaging bit.
A bout of cramp can be very distressing, so if you're looking after someone who's suffering from cramp, you'll want to be as calming and sensitive as possible. Oh, and forgiving - they might say a few words and phrases that they'll regret later. Just remind yourself it wasn't them speaking, it was the cramp that possessed them.

I suffer from Fibromyalgia, and I get terrible leg cramps, cramps in my rib cage, toes, feet, hands!!! I studied Fibromyalgia, and Guaifensin was recomended. The doctor's prescription was about $40.00.
My cousin found a product called Mucinex. It is an expectorant. It contains 600mg of Guaifensin. I take one in the morning and one at night. No more cramps!!!
There is also a muscle relaxant called Soma. It also takes cramps away, but it makes your head a little fuzzy!!!
Good luck and may God bless you.

Have him eat a banana about twice a day. It is probably a potassium deficiency. That will cause severe leg cramps

when u cramp up it is because ur mussles have not had time to warm up. the best way to do that is to stretch a little bitt be for he works. If he stretches out his mussles it is almost like preheating them and preparing them for the task at hand.
