The same thing happened to me last year from a sinus infection -- I begin coughing for days, and finally, something finally strains in my lower back. It hurts to be in most positions, aside from lying down, leaning back, and a certain way of standing. Bending over is a BIG no-no.

How can I make the pain go away? I've taken acetaminophen, but what can I do to heal my back, in the quickest manner possible? Being out-of-sorts like this won't work for long -- I'm a nursing major in college in which my agility is necessary.

I'm a nursing STUDENT, not a physical therapist or a chiropracter. You do realize there are specialists in the fields of medicine?

It depends if it is soft tissue or a herniated disc causing the problem both known to occur from coughing. In most cases rest and heat to the area help some. Acetaminophen is okay but it won't address any inflammation or muscle tension, you should try a OTC muscle relaxer that has ibuprofen in it or see your doctor and get a proper diagnosis. I know you want a quick fix but depending on the cause of your lower back pain ie..muscle spasms, slipped disc ect.. it may take a while for the area to heal fully. Soft tissue (muscle) can take up to 6wks to fully repair and a disc can take many months to fully repair, not that you won't be able to go to school ect.. when the initial pain decreases and your mobility returns you will have to be very cautious.
You said this happened before, so you must have a weakened back area and in your future line of work the risk of repeated injury is high. If you could get a referral to a physiotherapist they could help straighten your back and reduce the chance of future injury.
Good luck with whatever you decide and I hope your back pain is gone soon.

There are so many factors as to why the coughing can cause back pain. If you are wanting to avoid going to the dr's then you should alternate hot and cold compresses to the area. Try as often as possible to lay down or sit up straight depending on whether you work or not. Also massaging the area will help, but may not cure the pain. I am not a physician and can not suggest for you to take OTC back pain medicine or aspirin or other pain relievers. But, these may as well help. Try to soak in a tub of moderately warm water, or a hot shower a bit if possible too. Hope you feel better soon. Good Luck!

Hunching over will do it - get into a hot shower, bend over gently and try and touch your nose to your knees. It's fine if you don't make it all the way, you just want to stretch your back. When you get out, put an ice pack on the part of your back that hurt, and take an over the counter NSAIDs if you can, such as Motrin. If you can get someone to help you put some BenGay on it, that'll help a lot, too.

Also If you want to go the natural way route then You can permanently relief/treat lower back pain, upper back pain , sciatica, hip pain and neck pain.End the chronic back pain, regain your natural inner balance and achieve the lasting back pain freedom.

I have have strained muscles for many years in my back from job injuries. I have tried every treatment under the sun, but the most effective treatment is to ice it first- get the inflammation down in the muscle, follow up by heat by either creams, hot shower, or heating pad then ice again. Ice and heat- ice and heat. After that try a stronger pain med like a Motrin or Ibuprofen to help with pain and inflammation. You could also consider an aleve. Just try to take it easy. If you have a back brace like the lifting ones that they wear at home depot it really helps to support those muscles in your back until they heal.

Really rest and time are your only friends along with these other things.

I hope you feel better soon.

Back strains are difficult. If you happen to strain the muscles on one side they tend to weaken and the muscles on the other side can pull your back out of alignment which causes the pain that won't go away. I have done this from time to time and found that the best solution for me is a chiropractor who is also an accupunturist. He can realign my back which was pulled out of alignment by the weakened muscles.
