if you're craving it in large amounts over a long period of time, then you might have a deficiency that you're body is trying to make up for.

craving large amounts of dairy means you need more calcium.

an often common one with pregnant women is referred to as "pica". it's the craving of dirt, clay, soil, etc b/c they don't have enough iron in their blood stream.

hope this helps

I'd say mind. Sometimes people develop memories or feelings from eating a certain food. I never craved the taste of ketchup after my mom made me eat the excess when I put too much on my food. :(

I believe the body has been trying to communicate what it needs in certain foods , the why is a mystery only until we take time to understand how each organ in the body lives together and guides our choice of foods to live healthy.

I think it's just in your mind, and depends on your mood.
But it could be your body telling you that you need it...
Like chocolate when you're on your period.. chocolate releases "good" hormones inside your body apparently.
But then again, it could also be that you want to feel good so you want chocolate.

That would be interesting to know actually, I'll stick around here for a bit!

A doctor once told my diabetic father that if he craved a specific kind of food, he should have some. I don't know whether you need it or not, but sometimes you really want it. Just don't go overboard.

There are studies that suggest that cravings are the body's way of gathering missing nutrients. That's the excuse I use whenever I crave chocolate... :)

Sometimes cravings do indicate a person is lacking a certain nutrient. If you are sufficiently nourished, however, it is quite unlikely that this is the case.

If you are craving salt most likely you are starting to become dehydrated. Your body tells you what you need.

There are certain disorders or diseases that cause cravings. So it might be a chemical thing in you, or it might be that you love chocolate, which is not necessarily a bad thing.

More often than not, your body is telling you that you need a set of vitamins, minerals, or other ingredients that kind of food contains.
