is it possible to install windows vista without having to reinstall drivers and such? Because I seem to have...misplaced... the recovery dvd that came with my laptop (i know, not good at all). I was really hoping I could upgrade to vista without having messed up speakers, graphics, etc. I've tried Vista on my brother's laptop and was quite impressed by what I saw (not a single freeze I couldnt fix quickly or crashes! yay!!) And ever since I tested my own laptop and found out it was vista premium capable, ive been DYING to upgrade, except for this little (haha) nagging issue.
Anyways, thanks in advance!!!

Don't do it!! You'll be very sorry.
Vista is just ok on a new PC, but even then it's problematical as there's all sorts of driver problems and it's reeeeaaalll slow unless you have gigs of RAM. On an older PC, forget it.

As Vista and XP do not use the same drivers, any drivers you have on a disk for XP would be useless. Before making the switch, take a moment to go into the Device Manager and get a list of the main components in the system (audio, video, etc) and check the Internet for Vista drivers for them before doing the upgrade. Download all the drivers and save them CD so you can install any you need once the upgrade is complete.

Just to emphasize the above responses, make sure you download the drivers to CD or a USB drive prior to the upgrade. The primary driver you'll want to ensure you have though is the network driver. Most likely the Vista upgrade media has your driver, but just incase it doesn't, you'll want to have a copy of that one. As long as you can get back on the Internet with your laptop, you can upgrade the other drivers from the defaults included with MS Vista (i.e. you'll have at least basic video). Audio drivers can be downloaded after the upgrade too if you prefer.
Mind if I ask why you are upgrading? I haven't seen a compelling reason to upgrade an existing XP system to Vista (no applications or stability "must haves"). I do have it on two new PCs I bought but I have no plans to upgrade my older PC.

Hi, Vista is going to have to require drivers that are designed for itself as it can't use Xp drivers. if u install any Xp driver on to it or any software that was not designed for Windows Vista then ur operating system will crash. The good news is that it doesn't matter whether u have ur recovery DVD or not cause it probably doesn't contain Vista drivers. Just visit all ur hardware manufacturer's website and download Vista for ur self. Then just do a fresh install of Vista and install the drivers u downloaded for it. Vista will work fine then.
Good Luck!

usually the computer should upgrade to vista without any hardware driver problems. However, If you encounter any problems, Windows Vista's "Problem Solution Center" searches the internet for the driver and gives you a link to directly download it.
It's advisable not to use vista for anything but basic pc use unless you have at least 2 gigs ram, especially for gaming.
If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact me as I'm a pretty experienced PC user. I've been using vista ever since it came out, and it's just been getting smoother by the day. Hope I've helped!

Before you try this, download all the Vista compatible drivers from the laptop manufacturer. Without this you are in big trouble. Burn them top cd for use after the upgrade. In any case the recovery disk for your machine will only be XP compatible, as that is what you were supplied with the machine.

when you upgrade your system to vista it is most likely that you also need to install the driver for your hardware, but in different version. some driver that is already installed on your xp migh not work on vista. (Use Vista upgrader tool to know what driver you need to reinstall, you can download it from microsoft.com) Once you alreday know, go to the website of the hardware (e.g. graphic.NVIDIA website)and download the driver you need for your harware but choose FOR VISTA.
