Help my 10yr old male cat developed diabeties. He gets two shots a day, but we can not get under control, we are working with his vet on a weekly basis. The problem is he has decided to stop using his litter box. He goes in front of door, just urine. We thought we had licked the problem by confining him at night, but this morning we found he had soiled the rug again. He has clean litter we change it every day. It has gotten to be such a problem, we may have to put him down which would break my heart.

Have you heard of Stud Pants? They go on unneutered male cats in catteries so they can be allowed around the house without fear of them spraying anything. These would catch the urine just fine, but would probably block any poop. However, if you know his pooping schedule, you can put these on after he does his solids and feel pretty safe. The things use regular women's 'pads' in them so would hold any amount of urine he could do.

He's probably feeling awful about not using the box, a diabetic cat can pee three or more times a day, rather than just the one or two times a normal cat does--I wonder if offering a different sort of thing for him would help too. Like a box with lower sides on it, filled with sand instead of litter. Cats usually can't resist that, if only for the newness factor.

You said he goes on a rug instead of his box. Is the rug a mat kind of thing? If it is, you could put that mat under the cats box since it already has his scent on it. That might bring the cat back to going in his box. Have you moved his box recently? If so, don't be doing that as it will cause the cat to get confused and will get mixed up on where to go. You might want to talk with your veterinarian about this and see if there is anything they can recommend to you. I hope this helps!

Lots of cats with problems do this at this age and many people find it fair to put them down. Its not fair for you or the cat, he isnt enjoying life anymore and neither are you. 10 years is great though, be strong and do what feels right for you.
